LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore Lily Neilson scored her third and fourth goals of the weekend, but the Bucknell field hockey team suffered a 5-2 loss to Temple at Graham Field on Sunday following a big second half by the Owls. Bucknell fell to 1-4 on the season with the defeat, and Temple improved to 5-1.
Temple held a 1-0 lead going into halftime after the two teams combined for just two shots and three penalty corner over the first 30 minutes. The Owls then tallied three goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter and added another in the 51st minute of the game.
Neilson scored the Bison goals with one minute left in the third quarter and with five seconds left in the fourth. She now has seven goals through five games this season. Mackenzie Kile and Nicky Punt supplied the two Bucknell assists.
Bucknell seemingly carried most of the momentum through the first half and had the only shot of the game until the 22nd minute when Temple's Tess Muller scored on the team's first attempt of the contest during a penalty corner.
Temple then emerged from the locker room and attacked the Bison defense with a flurry of goals all within a two-minute span. The first was scored on an empty cage after Clara McCormick was forced to come out and make a save on the opposite side. The Owls added another goal off a deflection, and they scored their third of the quarter on a penalty corner once sophomore Nora Frederick replaced McCormick at goalkeeper.
The Bison made their way onto the scoreboard at the 44:07 mark when Punt fired a long pass from Bucknell's end past several Temple defenders, and Neilson wound up all alone at midfield before running towards a 1-on-1 with the goalkeeper. She floated a shot over the keeper and into the net, making it a 4-1 game heading into the final frame.

The Owls put the contest out of reach five minutes into the fourth, as McKenna Burkhardt scored on a penalty corner for her second goal of the game.
The Bison were awarded a corner with under a minute to go, and Neilson converted after receiving a pass from Kile with just seconds left. Kile now has four assists on the year.
McCormick finished the game with two saves, and Frederick posted one.
Bucknell opens Patriot League play with a trip to Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept. 17. The game is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
