WEST POINT, N.Y. – Bucknell and Army West Point split an important doubleheader on Saturday afternoon in a clash of the top two teams in the Patriot League standings. The Black Knights won game one 3-1 in a pitcher's duel, before the Bison came from behind in game two after an early 3-0 deficit to claim the second game of the day. Bucknell clinched the season series between the two teams with the win on Saturday, and will play its regular-season finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Bison (19-22, 14-10 PL) remain in the second spot in the Patriot league standings behind the Black Knights (21-20, 14-6 PL).
Game One: Army 3, Bucknell 1.
The Bison received another good pitching performance from junior Will Greer (6 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 SO), but the Black Knights benefited from a solid performance of its own on the bump from Connelly Early, who limited Bucknell to just four hits overall while adding nine strikeouts as the Black Knights took a 3-1 victory in the first game of the day.
It was the Bison who struck first in game one, with a leadoff walk on nine pitches by Anthony Sherwin starting the game before the sophomore moved a base on a wild pitch. That set up Jacob Corson to continue his good run of form after his late RBI single at Penn State with another RBI single to left field to score Sherwin and give the Bison a 1-0 lead.
Army did its damage in the bottom of the second, scoring all three of its runs in the frame in capitalizing on two Bison errors. Three of the first four Army batters reached, with the first run coming courtesy of an RBI single by Cam Cerruto. An errant pickoff attempt followed by a throwing error from the outfield accounted for the Black Knights' second run of the inning, followed by an RBI single from Braden Golinski to make the score 3-1.
The one run in the first would be the only run that Bucknell could muster in the game, as Early found his groove later, limiting the Bison to just three hits the rest of the game. Two of those hits came in the fourth inning on back-to-back singles by Corson and Tyler Dunn as Bucknell looked to get back into the game. After a groundout moved both runners, Early managed to strike out the final two Bison batters of the frame to help maintain the lead.
Kyle Lyons accounted for Bucknell's final hit of the game to leadoff the fifth, but only one Bucknell baserunner would reach from that point on as the Black Knights secured the first game of the day.
Corson tallied two of Bucknell's four hits on the day in a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.
Game Two: Bucknell 9, Army 5
The Bison overcame an early deficit, trailing 3-0 after one inning in taking the lead for good on Chris Cannizzaro's two-RBI double in the fifth inning. Cannizzaro managed three hits with a season-high four RBIs, and the Bison benefited from 13 hits overall in taking the second game of the day, 9-5.
Army started the game with the momentum, scoring three runs on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and two RBI singles in taking an early 3-0 advantage.
However, it didn't take long for the Bison bats to warm up, as Bucknell tied the game in the third on four hits in the frame. Logan Kellerman started the proceedings with a home run, the first of his career, to left field for Bucknell's first run, before back-to-back hits with two outs from Anthony Sherwin and Chris Cannizzaro extended Bucknell's lead. Sherwin's single was followed up by Cannizzaro's team-leading fourth home run of the season to left field on the first pitch he saw as Bucknell tied the game at three once more.
Army took the lead in the third on an error by the Bison in the infield, but the Bison stormed back once more with five hits in the fifth to add four more runs and take a 7-4 lead. Lyons, Sherwin, and Cannizzaro each started the innings with hits, the latter providing a two-RBI double down the left field line for Bucknell's first two runs of the inning. Corson and Dunn then each rapped RBI hits, a double and a single, respectively, as Bucknell took the lead for good.
After the initial trouble, Bucknell starter Ben Magovern found his rhythm, keeping the Black Knights off the board until the lefty was replaced by fellow first-year Tyler O'Neill after the Black Knights loaded the bases with two outs in the frame. O'Neill managed to get a fly out to Cannizzaro in left field to end the inning and keep the Bison with a four-run advantage.
Bucknell added two insurance runs in the sixth, when Cannizzaro tallied his third hit of the day to reach before touching home later in the inning on a wild pitch. Brendan Lowery then singled up the middle to score Grant Voytovich for Bucknell's final run of the game.
That would be all the support necessary for O'Neill, who followed up his 13-strikeout performance in a close defeat to Lehigh with a win on Saturday after pitching the final 4.1 innings. A home run by Golinski to start the sixth rounded out Army's scoring for the game, as O'Neill shut out the Black Knights for the rest of the way for Bucknell's third win over the league leaders.
Cannizzaro's three hits led the way for the Bison, while Sherwin added two hits and two runs scored. The senior tied his career best with four RBIs, a feat he also accomplished at Virginia as a sophomore. Sherwin now has 43 runs scored this season, just three shy of earning a spot on Bucknell's single-season top 10 for runs scored in a season. Sherwin's 33 walks this season also rank third on Bucknell's all-time list for a single season. Corson also added multiple hits once more in a 2-for-5 effort with a run scored. Kellerman's home run makes him the ninth different Bison to hit a home run this season.
The two teams will meet once more in the rubber match for the series on Sunday at 1 p.m, with a live broadcast available on ESPN+.
