Men’s Tennis Storms Back to Beat Boston University in Patriot League Tournament Quarterfinals

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Michael Owen and Tim Zelikovsky won the tying and clinching points just moments apart to lift the fourth-seeded Bucknell men's tennis team to a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded Boston University in the Patriot League Tournament quarterfinals on Friday at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Bucknell defeated Boston University 4-0 earlier this month in South Williamsport, but the improving Terriers provided more resistance in this one. Harrison Gold and Nick Mueller won at No. 1 doubles, improving their record to 6-0 together this spring, but the Terriers claimed second doubles and then won a third-set tiebreaker at No. 3 to claim the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
The Bison got straight-set singles wins from Mueller at No. 2 and Nicolas Grunig at No. 5, but Boston University won on Courts 1 and 6 to grab a 3-2 lead in the match.
On courts 3 and 4, Owen and Zelikovsky both split their first two sets before taking control with early breaks in the third set. Both built 4-1 leads in the deciding frame before winning 6-3. Owen finished off Adrian Pawlowski at No. 4, and then one point later Zelikovsky's service winner against Gabe Brown ended it.
It was Zelikovsky's 15th straight singles victory, as he improved to 16-4 in duals and 22-7 overall this season. He is a perfect 7-0 against Patriot League opponents.
Bucknell will now face No. 1 seed and tournament host Navy on Saturday at 10 a.m. in the semifinal round. The Midshipmen made quick work of No. 8 Holy Cross in the first match of the day.
