Bucknell began its eighth-inning rally with a one-out single by Kyle Lyons, who moved to third on a passed ball and a wild pitch by the Nittany Lions. That set up Chris Cannizzaro's RBI double through the left side to give Bucknell the lead. Corson then singled home the eventual game-winning run that scored the senior Cannizzaro and established a two-run advantage.
The Bison jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first, with Cannizzaro starting the proceedings with a single. Grant Voytovich then walked on a full count to put two runners on. Corson, Tyler Dunn, and Brendan Lowery then doubled in three straight appearances to score two runs, with an error on Corson's double accounting for the third run in the frame.
The Nittany Lions tied the game after one run in the first and two in the second, before another three-run inning by the Bison established a 6-3 lead in the third. Corson was involved once again with a bunt single, before another single from Lowery put two runners on. That set up designated hitter Kendall Pierson, who blasted a triple to right center to score both runners. Logan Kellerman followed that up with an RBI single for Bucknell's third run of the inning.
Brady Swenson earned the start for the Bison, keeping the Nittany Lions off the scoreboard in the third and fourth. Swenson retired the side in order in the former, before he was replaced in the fifth inning. The four innings were a career best for the first-year, who was replaced by Renn Lints in the fifth after the Nittany Lions put two runners on with nobody out to start the frame.
Lints came up big in the fifth, limiting the home team to a lone sac fly before striking out the final batter to maintain Bucknell's lead, 6-4, after five. Lints also pitched a clean sixth inning in another solid performance for the senior reliever.
The Nittany Lions tied the game once more in the seventh on a two-RBI triple that reached the wall after a diving effort in the Bison outfield helped the ball trickle to the wall. Lyons, Lowery, and Kellerman then combined to nail the potential go-ahead run at home on a great relay throw as Tayven Kelley attempted to stretch that hit into an inside-the-park home run.
That play turned out to be big in Bucknell's one-run victory, as the hits by Cannizzaro and Corson gave Bucknell the 8-6 lead in the eighth. Graeme Carroll pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the inning, before he was replaced by Andrew Funovits.
The Nittany Lions brought one run back in the ninth on an RBI triple by Josh Spiegel, putting the tying run on third. Funovits then struck out the next batter he faced, before getting a flyout to right fielder Grant Voytovich to end the game. Funovits' eighth career save puts him in a tie for sixth on Bucknell's all-time list with Danny Rafferty.
The win for Bucknell over the Nittany Lions was its second over a Power-5 school this season after an earlier win at Duke. The Bison managed 12 hits overall, with Corson and Cannizzaro each collecting three. Dunn also had a multi-hit day in the win, while Carroll was credited with the win on the mound.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a big weekend series at Army in a battle of the top two teams in the Patriot League standings.
