HELLERTOWN, Pa. – Jackson Bussell fired a 3-under-par 69 to jump to the top of the leaderboard, and the Bucknell men's golf team is in third place in a field of 19 teams after the first round of the ABARTA Coca-Cola Collegiate Challenge, hosted by Lafayette at the Steel Club.
Bucknell opened with a 296 team score on a chilly day in the Lehigh Valley, which is only four shots behind leader Iona and three in back of second-place Rhode Island. Bucknell's 296 was the best mark among the six Patriot League teams in the field. The host Leopards are just one shot behind the Bison at 297, followed by Lehigh (301), Holy Cross (311), Navy (311), and Colgate (312).
Bussell matched his season low, posting 69 for the third time in 2021-22. He was one of only six players in the field to break par on Sunday, and he will begin the final round tied for the lead with Iona's Justin Burkhamer. Rhode Island's Andrew DiPetrillo carded a 2-under 70, and three others shot 71.
Bussell began the day with a bogey on the 7th hole, but he got red hot on the Steel Club's back nine. Bussell made five birdies in a span of seven holes, including three in a row at holes 14-15-16 to get to 4-under on the day. After giving a couple of strokes back on the wraparound to the front nine, Bussell eagled the par-5 fifth hole.
Backing up Bussell was Blake Wisdom with a 73, Jason Lohwater with a 75, and Jack Garner with a 79. Michael Rudnick's 82 was discarded.
Wisdom made three birdies in his round, while Lohwater, Gardner, and Rudnick had two each. All five Bison in the lineup birdied the par-5 15th hole.
The tournament wraps up on Monday with another 18 holes.
