Men’s Tennis Drops Tight 4-2 Decision to Army in Patriot League Opener
3/19/2022 6:14:00 PM | Men's Tennis
SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Harrison Gold and Tim Zelikovsky won their singles matches in straight sets, but Army West Point pulled out a couple of three-setters and nosed past Bucknell 4-2 in the Patriot League openers for both teams on Saturday at the Central PA Tennis Center.
Army (10-11, 1-0 PL) started the day by taking the doubles point with wins on Courts 2 and 3, but the Bison drew even with wins in two of the first three singles matches to finish. Gold was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Diego Huttepain at No. 1, and Zelikovsky dispatched Thomas Lake by the same score at No. 4.
Zelikovsky bounced back nicely after missing the four matches in Florida last week, and he extended his singles winning streak to seven straight.
Army's Samuel Haikal at No. 5 and Jake Huarte at No. 6 both dropped their second sets but came back to win in the third, clinching the verdict for the Black Knights. Bucknell's Nick Mueller and Army's AJ Woodman were locked in a tight battle in the third set when the match was clinched.
Bucknell is back in action on Sunday with a non-league contest at Cornell at 3:30 p.m.
