EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Bucknell University baseball team fell 4-3 to Mount St. Mary's in its final tune up before hosting Navy for the Patriot League opening series this weekend. Bucknell tied the game at three in the top of the ninth inning on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Kendall Pierson, but the Mount responded in the bottom of the tenth inning with a solo home run to earn its second straight walk-off victory in the series between the two teams.Â
Â
Much like last season's matchup between the two schools, it took extra innings to decide this one, with the Mount also walking off in the bottom of the tenth in 2021 on an RBI single. This time, it was the Mount's Thomas Brambley hitting a deep shot to center field that decided another close matchup between the two teams. Â
Â
Bucknell started brightly in this one, when Kyle Lyons rocketed a two-RBI double that scored Henry Novicki and Mason Kelly, who each singled to start the inning as Bucknell took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Â
Â
Brady Swenson made his first career start for the Bison, not allowing a hit through the first two innings while adding a pair of strikeouts. However, the Mount fought back with two runs on an RBI single and a ground out in the frame to tie the game at two.
Â
The Mount took the lead in the fifth on an RBI single and had the bases loaded with one out, but reliever Andrew Funovits prevented any further damage in the inning with a big double play fielded by shortstop Anthony Sherwin to end the scoring threat for MSM.     Â
Â
Bucknell only managed one hit through the final four innings, a single by Kyle Lyons that gave the junior his third hit of the day, but still managed to find the tying run in the top of the ninth. Â
Â
Lyons walked on four straight pitches to start the frame, before back-to-back fielder's choice plays gave the Bison two outs in the inning with one runner on first. Brendan Lowery and Chris Cannizzaro then walked on five and four pitches, respectively, to load the bases. That set up DH Kendall Pierson, who drew a walk on a full count that scored Grant Voytovich. However, the Mount managed to get the final out of the inning to send the game to extras for Bucknell for the second straight contest.   Â
Â
The Bison managed to get the go-ahead run on second with one out in the tenth, but a heads-up play by the Mount infield on a line out helped the home team escape the inning unscathed. Â
Â
That set up Brambley's home run to center field for the Mount, who improved to 3-9 this season. Â
Â
Lyons tied his career high with three hits on the day, while Novicki, Kelly, Cannizzaro, and Voytovich each added hits.
Â
Bucknell returns to action on Friday when it hosts Navy for a four-game series at Depew Field over the weekend. The Bison will play the first game of the series at 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon.   Â
