RESULTS
WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Jackson Bussell fired a 3-under par 69 on Sunday, and his birdie at the par-5 17th hole gave Bucknell a one-stroke lead over Stetson and Siena after the first of three rounds of the Bucknell Veterans Intercollegiate at Orange County National's Crooked Cat Course.
The Bison made their 2022 spring debut with a 292 team score. Bucknell led throughout most of the day before falling into a first-place tie with the Saints and Hatters, but late birdies from Blake Wisdom and Bussell at No. 17 helped the Bison regain the overnight lead.
Chicago State sits in fourth place with a 300 team score, followed by Missouri State (301), Holy Cross (303), and Bryant (314). Bucknell also has a five-man "B" squad entered, and that group tallied a 309 on Sunday.
One of the highlights of the tournament is the participation of a team from the Veteran Golfers Association. Nick Carney led that group with an opening-round 77.
South Florida and North Florida sent a contingent of individuals, and all four USF players are in the top six on the individual leaderboard. Luc Breuer and Chase Gullikson share the lead after posting 5-under 67s. Bussell is tied for third alongside USF's Shubham Jaglan and Stetson's Ryan Peters. Ten players broke par in the opening round.
Bussell got out to a great start in the first tournament of the spring season. He opened with a birdie at the par-5 first, and he added three more birdies without a blemish on the way to a 4-under 32 front nine.
Backing up Bussell was Jack Gardner with a 1-over 73, Wisdom with a 74, and Jason Lohwater with a 76. Michael Rudnick's 79 was discarded. Bucknell and Stetson tied for the team lead with 13 birdies each, one more than Siena.
The Bison "B" squad was paced by Jake Maddaloni, who posted a 75.
Round two gets underway on Monday morning with 9:30 a.m. tee times.
