Comeback Wins Lead Men’s Tennis to 4-3 Triumph at Siena
2/11/2022 10:08:00 PM | Men's Tennis
LATHAM, N.Y. – Nick Mueller, Tim Zelikovsky, and Ink Chen all won three-set singles matches, and Harrison Gold earned his first collegiate victories to lead the Bucknell men's tennis team to a dramatic 4-3 win over Siena on Friday evening on the indoor courts at Tri-City Fitness.
Zelikovsky clinched the team victory at No. 4 singles. He dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker to Jose Pablo Davila, but then he took the second set, 6-3, and ran away with the third-set tiebreaker, 10-2.
Mueller and Chen also came from a set down to win at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. Mueller defeated Tomas del Olmo 3-6, 6-3, 10-8, and Chen took the third-set tiebreaker 10-3 after splitting a pair of 7-5 sets. Chen's win evened the match at 3-3, then Zelikovsky clinched it a few minutes later.
Gold, a UNC Wilmington transfer who made his Bucknell debut last week at Drexel, teamed with Zelikovsky for a 7-5 win at No. 1 doubles, but the Saints won on Courts 2 and 3 to take the doubles point.
Gold returned at No. 1 singles and got the Bison level with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Dante Russo.
"This was a quality win, as Siena was coming off a convincing win over Boston University," said head coach Bruce Myers. "It was good that we showed a lot of resiliency after losing a lot of first sets in singles. We need to find a way to start more quickly tomorrow against a solid Marist team that we have not beaten in a while."
The Bison and Red Foxes meet on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Cross Court Tennis Club in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
