Bucknell Men's Water Polo Goes 2-0 on Final Day of Regular Season at Kinney Natatorium

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team went 2-0 at home on the final day of the regular season, defeating Wagner and Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day at Kinney Natatorium.
Bucknell prevailed in a defensive battle in the first game of the day against Wagner, 11-5, before unleashing 22 goals in an offensive outburst in front of an energetic crowd at Kinney Natatorium in a 22-10 win over Mount St. Mary's.
Sunday's pair of wins helps Bucknell claim the three seed and a crucial first-round bye in the MAWPC Championship set for November 18.
Game One: Bucknell 11, Wagner 5
Bucknell overturned an early deficit in the first game of the day, scoring six unanswered goals after falling behind 2-1 at the 4:31 mark of the first period. After the Seahawks took the lead, Bucknell close the first quarter with two goals, one each from Aleksa Stefanovic and Hasan Mogultay. Stefanovic's goal came with just 16 seconds left on the clock in the quarter.
Bucknell continued that momentum in the second quarter, blanking the Seahawks while adding two more goals courtesy of Vlasceanu and Mogultay to take a 5-2 lead. Bucknell added two more goals, this time by Shay Gillearn and Stefanovic, to complete the run before Wagner finally broke a nearly 16-minute scoreless streak with a goal at the 4:29 mark of the third.
Bucknell added three more goals in the third and one more goal in the fourth from Doruk Ozar to take an 11-5 win.
Game Two: Bucknell 22, MSM 10
Bucknell found its offensive firepower in the second game of the day after seniors Jack Lewis, Vlasceanu, Colby Paine, Will Gildea, Adrien Touzot, and Josh Yardley were honored prior to the contest.
Paine highlighted his day with a career-best four goals while fellow senior Yardley also added four goals in the win. Gildea added a late goal in the fourth while Vlasceanu and Lewis each scored multiple goals in the win.
Bucknell and The Mount each had the offense working well in the first quarter, scoring nine combined goals in the period. Bucknell managed to give itself some breathing room at the end of the quarter after scoring two unanswered goals to take a 6-3 lead after one. Paine was important for the Bison in the early goings, scoring three of Bucknell's first four goals in a bright start.
The Mount managed to pull within three on several occasions in the second half, but Bucknell kept its foot on the gas, eventually pulling away in the second with four more unanswered goals to close the period to take a 12-6 lead after The Mount had pulled within three with 4:49 left in the period. Bucknell never looked back, scoring ten more goals in the second half to cruise to a 22-10 victory.
Bucknell will now await its opponent in the MAWPC Championship, where the Bison will enter the tournament at the No. 3 seed.
