ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team fell 8-6 to Navy on Saturday afternoon in a defensive battle.
Bucknell (12-14, 8-6 MAWPC) was tied at the 2:28 mark in the second quarter, 4-4, but a late Navy run helped the Mids take their second win over the Bison this season.
Navy scored four of the next five goals after Josh Yardley's first goal of the day with 2:28 left in the first half helped Bucknell come back from an early 4-2 deficit. Bucknell found itself trailing by multiple goals on multiple occasions in the first half, but managed to tie the game on the goal by the senior before Navy broke the tie to take a 5-4 lead on a goal with 18 seconds left in the half.
That run was the first of three unanswered goals for the Mids before Jack Murad found the back of the cage with 5:54 left in the third to pull within two, 7-5. Navy found a response shortly afterwards to restore a three-goal advantage, holding off the Bison in the final seconds to take an 8-6 victory.
Yardley led the way for Bucknell with two goals while Andu Vlasceanu, Hasan Mogultay, Shay Gillearn, and Murad also scored for the Bison.
Bucknell returns home on Sunday afternoon for two games against MAWPC foes Mount St. Mary's and Wagner.
