BRONX, N.Y. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team dropped a narrow 13-12 decision to No. 18 Fordham on Saturday afternoon in an MAWPC matchup.
The Bison managed to nearly overturn an 8-2 deficit in the third quarter to get within one, 11-10, with 4:26 remaining, but the Rams would go on to score two more goals to keep the Bison at bay in the final minutes. The Bison scored the final two goals of the game, including a goal by Shay Gillearn with 1:12 left, but the Rams held on to stay unbeaten in conference games this season.
It was all Fordham in the early goings, although Bucknell did take the lead on a goal by Andu Vlasceanu at the 5:21 mark of the first quarter. However, the Rams would go on to score eight of the next nine goals in jumping out to an 8-2 lead. The home team kept Bucknell off of the scoreboard for nearly eight minutes before Jack Lewis found the back of the cage for the Bison at the 5:34 mark of the third.
Bucknell made its move to close the third, scoring four of the next five goals to pull within two, 9-7. The Bison pulled within one goal three times in the fourth, but couldn't manage to tie the game as Fordham held on for a 13-12 win.
Vlasceanu scored four goals in the defeat while Hasan Mogultay, Gillearn, and Lewis each scored multiple goals.
The Bison will head to Navy next Saturday before hosting Wagner and Mount St. Mary's next Sunday.
