Men’s Soccer Rolls Past Holy Cross, 4-1 on Senior Day

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's soccer team used a blend of youth and experience to produce a 4-1 Senior Day win over Holy Cross on Saturday at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. Senior Eddie Perez-Pelaez scored a key second-half insurance goal and also handed out two assists, and freshmen Zane Domsohn and Charlie Holmes combined for the other three goals as the Bison put four on the board for the first time in three seasons.
Domsohn, who scored his first collegiate goal last time out against Colgate, added two more in this one, including a tiebreaking goal that capped a wild first-half flurry that saw three goals scored in a span of just 5:10.
The first 20 minutes of the game were primarily played between the 18s, with neither team able to crack the other side's back line. That changed in the 25th minute when Holmes got in behind and slipped a shot past goalkeeper Josh Tubbs for his second goal of the season. Freshman defender Ben Sheffield set the six-player build-up in motion by winning a ball in the back and saving it on the touch line. The ball was played ahead to Collin Murphy and then to Perez-Pelaez, who delivered a perfect through ball to Holmes for the breakaway.
Bucknell's lead lasted only 91 seconds, however, as Jack Ostrosky's centering feed from the left side of the box caromed in off a Bison defender.
Undeterred by the own goal, the Bison got it right back just before the half-hour mark. Freshman goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth earned the assist with a long ball off the deck over the back line. Domsohn was the first to it, and his first-touch rip from the top of the 18 rippled the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Bucknell did not concede a shot in the first half and took the one-goal margin into the locker room, but Holy Cross (4-9-4, 0-5-3 PL) came alive for a stretch in the final 25 minutes. Lapworth was not needed for a save until that point, but he showed quick reflexes to palm aside a close-range shot from Ethan Gill after a long throw into the box.
Moments later, Lapworth was well-positioned for a save on Jon Klein, and then Holy Cross scoring leader Evan Jones found space just inside the 18 and fired a shot over the bar.
The Bison regrouped in the final 10 and put two insurance goals on the board. Perez-Pelaez, back playing up top after spending most of the season in the back four, received a pass from fellow senior Mo Tall in the right channel and fired a shot off the left post and in to make it 3-1 with 8:12 remaining.
Less than five minutes later, Perez-Pelaez sent Domsohn in alone on the keeper, and Domsohn's deft finish gave him his first career two-goal game and three goals in the last two outings.
"I'm really happy for our guys," said head coach Dave Brandt afterward. "Throughout the season we've had some results that could have gone our way but didn't, so this one was earned and deserved. Eddie's goal was really big. We had taken our foot off the pedal for a bit and let Holy Cross have some opportunities, so getting that third goal was big. Eddie has been a center back for most of the season and is now playing up top. I really appreciate him working with us and his flexibility to do whatever is best for the team."
All four of Bucknell's senior field players started and contributed to the victory. Midfielder Chris Masur and back Jameson Railey both had strong games in addition to Tall and Perez-Pelaez. Those four along with goalkeeper Bennett Schwartz were all honored prior to the game.
The four goals were the most by the Bison (3-12-1, 2-5-1 PL) since a 4-1 win at Canisius on Sept. 1, 2019. It was the team's most goals in a Patriot League game since a 4-0 home win over Army on Nov. 7, 2015.
Bucknell wraps up the regular season on Wednesday night at Loyola.
