Schwartz Big Off Bench as Men’s Soccer Closes Season with 0-0 Draw at Loyola
11/2/2022 9:40:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BALTIMORE, Md. – It was a night to remember for senior goalkeeper Bennett Schwartz, who came off the bench and made big save after big save to help 10-man Bucknell salvage a scoreless tie at Loyola on Wednesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
The Bison wrapped up the season 3-12-2 overall and 2-5-2 in the Patriot League, but they finished on a strong note with a win, two draws, and a close 2-1 loss at fourth-ranked Syracuse over the last two weeks. Bucknell played the role of spoiler on Wednesday, eliminating defending-champion Loyola (4-5-8, 2-2-5 PL) from Patriot League Tournament inclusion.
Bucknell was forced to dig in defensively after starting goalkeeper Freddie Lapworth was shown a red card in the 40th minute. Lapworth ventured outside his box to break up a long ball played forward, but his challenge was a split-second late and he was sent off after a discussion between the referee and his assistant.
Schwartz came off the bench for his first action since Sept. 24, and he immediately made a tricky save on the free kick resulting from the foul. It was the first of his seven saves on the night, one shy of his career high. Many of those stops were highlight-reel variety as the shorthanded Bison were under duress for the entire second half.
Richie Nichols was victimized by Schwartz on three separate occasions, the first coming when he was 1v1 with the keeper in the 56th minute. In the 70th minute, Schwartz shuffled across his goal to smother a first-time redirect from Loc San at point-blank range, and then 10 minutes later he dove to his right to palm aside Nichols' long-distance attempt.
Loyola finished with a 28-4 shot advantage, including a 17-2 edge in the second half, but the Bison were not without a few scoring chances of their own. The best came in the 68th minute, when freshman center back Ben Sheffield got a clean header on a corner kick but saw it sail just barely over the crossbar.
Needing all three points to secure a postseason bid, Loyola sent all 10 field players forward in the final minutes. That led to a couple of 2v1 counters for the Bison, but both were broken up by the last man back.
Loyola had one more golden opportunity to steal a win in the final 30 seconds of the match, when a deflected ball found San at the back post, but he put his sliding attempt into the woodwork.
Lapworth made four saves before his departure, so it was an 11-save combined clean sheet for the Bison goalkeeper duo.
In addition to Schwartz, seniors Mo Tall, Jameson Railey, Chris Masur, and Eddie Perez-Pelaez also made their final Bucknell appearances.

Here's one of many great saves by Bennett Schwartz in the second half tonight at Loyola. Coming in cold after a red card, Schwartz made 7 stops to finish off the shutout. Quite a night for the senior in his final game in Orange & Blue. #rayBucknell@PatriotLeagueTV | @ESPN pic.twitter.com/H6v1zPSf0V
