BOSTON, Mass. – A moment of brilliance from Teresa Deda just 4:22 into the match followed by some steadfast defending gave the Bucknell women's soccer team a key 1-0 road victory over Patriot League-leading Boston University on Saturday at sunny Nickerson Field.
Now 5-1-1 in the Patriot League, the Bison leapfrogged the 5-2-0 Terriers to take over the top spot in the table with just two games remaining. Army West Point also has a chance to get to 5-1-1 later on Saturday evening when it hosts Navy.
The rematch of the 2021 Patriot League championship game produced the exact same scoreline. This time Bucknell's goal came off the right foot of Deda, who found space about 25 yards from goal and placed a high shot inside the top left corner not even five minutes into the match.
Katie Schiano was credited with an assist on the play for her first career point.
Bucknell's defense held strong from there, limiting the high-powered Terriers to seven total shots and just three on frame. It was the team's third straight shutout, and since falling 4-0 at Navy in the league opener on Sept. 16, the Bison have conceded only one goal in six PL contests.
Goalkeeper Jenna Hall stood on her head with several highlight-reel saves in Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Loyola, but this time her three saves were much more routine as the Bison defense rarely conceded a good scoring chance from the run of play.
Boston University did earn a couple of late corner kicks as it pushed numbers forward. With about eight minutes to play, Hall pounced on a dangerous loose ball in the box. With 3:30 to go the Terriers played a corner kick out to the top of the area, but the Bison defense closed out quickly to smother the shot attempt.
"This was a gutsy win for our group," said head coach Kelly Cook. "It's been a tough week for our team, so getting on the bus and making the long trip to Boston and coming away with a hard-earned win really shows the character and heart of our group. We said coming in that it was going to be important to get off to a good start, and we were able to do that. Defensively, it was a full team effort. Boston University is a very good team, and we did a great job limiting their chances."
Hall earned her third straight shutout and sixth solo clean sheet of the season. With 14 career shutouts, she moved into a tie for third place in Bucknell's all-time list alongside Sandita McDermott.
Now 8-5-2 overall, Bucknell now has a week off to prepare for its Senior Day game next Saturday against Army. It's a 2 p.m. start at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
