LEWISBURG, Pa. – It was a goalie show at Emmitt Field on Wednesday night, as Bucknell's Jenna Hall and Loyola's Paige Sim put their All-Patriot League talents on display in a 0-0 women's soccer draw at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Now 7-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in Patriot League play, Bucknell dropped down one spot into a share of second place with Army in the league table. Boston University, a 2-1 winner over Holy Cross, moved to 5-1 for 15 points, while the Bison and Black Knights are two points back.
Loyola (6-4-4, 3-1-2 PL) is alone in fourth place with 11 points, while Lehigh (3-2-1, 10) and Navy (3-3-0, 9) hold the final two postseason spots with three games remaining.
The scoreless finish was not indicative of the action in the Bucknell-Loyola match, as the two teams went end-to-end throughout much of the second half. There were a combined 17 shot attempts in the final 45 minutes, and Hall and Sim both tallied five second-half saves.
It was Sim providing the highlights early in the half. She saved Teresa Deda's 55th-minute penalty kick after Paige Temple drew a foul in the box, and then four minutes later she denied Petie Nassetta from point-blank range with a little help from defender Alex Searing sweeping the deflected shot off the goal line.
Loyola forward Baylee DeSmit was a handful all night with a game-high seven shots, five of which were on target. Hall's three best saves all came on the Greyhounds' leading scorer, two of which she went up high to tip shots off the crossbar.
The save of the night came in the 63rd minute, when DeSmit caught every bit of a volley on a bouncing ball in the box. Hall dove to her right and was able to palm away the hard shot.
Bucknell had some bright moments as the match moved past 80 minutes. Hannah Stuck went over the bar with an open header at the back post from Deda's corner kick, and then a minute later Abby Gearhart got a half-step on her defender in the box but her lunging shot also sailed over.
Hall's heroics were required once again in the final four minutes. She made a key punch on a tricky corner kick that was bending in on goal at the near post, and after Loyola maintained possession Hall robbed DeSmit again by going full extension to send the shot grazing off the top of the bar. On the ensuing corner kick, the ball pinballed around in the area before Hall pounced on an attempt from Michaela Virgin.
Bucknell outshot Loyola 16-11 on the night, and Hall finished with a season-high eight saves. Sim, the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year, made seven stops en route to her league-leading eighth shutout.
Not to be forgotten was the play of Bucknell's back four, each of whom played the full 90 minutes. Outside backs Katie Schiano and Meghan White had stellar nights, and center backs Brooke Tracey and Olivia DeConinck were solid as usual in the middle.
Next up for the Bison is a trip to Boston on Saturday for a rematch of the 2021 Patriot League championship game. Bucknell won that one 1-0 but will be facing a red-hot Boston University side that has won five straight, four by shutout, including a 1-0 win over No. 25 Harvard last week.

Jenna Hall made a season-high 8 saves tonight, including this late game-saver! Bucknell and Loyola finished in a 0-0 draw, but that scoreline does not do the game justice. Tons of action at both ends of the field between two good teams. #rayBucknell@PatriotLeagueTV | @ESPN pic.twitter.com/WtccnB1VHx
