Strong Doubles Play Highlights Men’s Tennis’s Trip to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The Bucknell men's tennis team sent four players to Richmond's River City Open over the weekend, and a 4-2 record in doubles play along with a strong finish in singles highlighted the weekend.
Veterans Harrison Gold and Michael Owen accompanied freshmen Amar Tahirovic and Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega to Richmond. The Bison went up against Delaware in singles and doubles on Friday, and the Blue Hens won all four singles matches, two of them coming in three sets. Owen and Bain Moreno de Vega won their doubles match, 8-7 (7-3) over James Wilkinson and Daniel Krulig.
On Saturday, Bucknell primarily faced George Mason, with a round of singles and two rounds of doubles. The Bison and Patriots split four closely contested singles matches, with the two freshmen winning in straight sets. Tahirovic defeated Niza Simunyola 7-5, 6-4, and Bain Moreno de Vega downed Dustin Ha 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Owen was beaten in three sets, and Gold lost a second-set tiebreaker.
Bucknell then took three doubles matches from George Mason, including two one-sided wins from Gold and Tahirovic. Owen and Bain Moreno de Vega prevailed in a tiebreaker, then came back in the afternoon and fell to a duo from host Richmond.
The Bison contingent faced four players from Longwood in singles matches on Sunday, and Bucknell took three of the four. Tahirovic downed Lukas Krause 6-1, 6-1; Owen defeated Nikhil Kulkami 6-4, 7-5; and Bain Moreno de Vega defeated Vselovod Rusin 6-0, 6-4.
