Men’s Tennis Off to Strong Start at ITA Atlantic Regional

RESULTS
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Senior Michael Owen and freshman Adam Stavrakos both won twice to advance to the Bronze Draw Round of 16, which is the final round of pre-qualifying, and Bucknell's four singles players in action combined for a 5-2 record on Wednesday on the opening day of the ITA Atlantic Regional, hosted by Virginia.
Owen breezed through his first two singles matches, defeating Duquesne's Bode Vance (6-3, 6-1) and James Madison's Aathreya Mahesh (6-3, 6-2) in straight sets. In the Round of 16, he will face George Mason's Zavan Fahim on Thursday at 10 a.m.
Stavrakas made his collegiate debut on Wednesday. He opened with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win over Dustin Ha of George Mason, followed by a 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Greek countryman Filippos Zachiotis of Mount St. Mary's. Stavrakas will next face Villanova's Cooper Gordon on Thursday at 10 a.m.
Owen and Stavrakas need one more win to qualify into the Silver Draw, as the top eight from the Bronze Draw advance.
Freshman Oscar Bain Moreno de Vega won his opening-round match, 6-2, 7-5 over Christos Dagklis of Mount St. Mary's. He then fell to Inigo Diaz of Saint Joseph's 6-4, 6-3.
Freshman Brendan McDonald was also relegated to the consolation draw after a three-set loss to Villanova's Joshua Robinson. McDonald won the first set 6-2, but Robinson came back to take the next two 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Tim Zelikovsky and freshman Amar Tahirovic will be starting their tournaments in the silver draw on Thursday. Tahirovic will face Old Dominion's Codie Van Schalkwyk at 11:45 a.m., and Zelikovsky will face one of the advancing players from the Bronze Draw at 2 p.m.
Bronze Draw doubles play also got started on Wednesday. The Bison tandems of Zelikovsky/Tahirovic and Owen/Stavrakas both had first-round byes. McDonald and Bain Moreno de Vegas fell 8-3 to Vance and Liam Wickwire from Duquesne.
