Bucknell Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision at Columbia
9/5/2021 4:38:00 PM | Women's Soccer
NEW YORK -- The Bucknell University women's soccer team fell 1-0 on the road at Columbia on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions took an early lead just 8:46 into the first half when the Lions' Sophia Cavaliere slipped the ball through near midfield to Nata Ramirez. Ramirez rounded the goalkeeper and slotted the ball home as Bucknell found itself trailing 1-0.
Bucknell responded brightly to the early deficit, creating a big chance just two minutes later. Senior right back Alana Carlucci fired in a ball near the top of the box to midfielder Abby Gearhart, who used an excellent first touch to drive towards the end line before firing a low cross to an onrushing Teresa Deda. Deda managed to divert the cross with her left foot on target, forcing a good save from Columbia goalkeeper Paige Nurkin.
Deda tested Nurkin once more from long range for Bucknell's other shot on target in the first half after Kenar Gelman won the ball in the midfield, but her effort was also saved as Bucknell went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Bucknell began the second half brightly, when a persistent Gearhart managed to deflect a Columbia attempted clearance in the box just a few minutes into the second half that trickled just wide of the left side of the goal.
The remainder of the tightly-contested second half yielded few chances until the Lions nearly put the game away with nine minutes to go. Columbia found space on the counter on the left wing as Bucknell pushed for an equalizer before the Lions' Annie Diaz-Silveira drove a low shot to the right corner. Sophomore goalkeeper Jenna Hall pushed away the ball to her left before the subsequent shot from the Lions' Ally Clark smashed off of the crossbar.
The Bison managed several shots on goal in the second half on shots from distance by Paige Temple and Deda, but Bucknell ultimately fell short in being kept off of the score sheet for the first time this season.
Columbia outshot Bucknell 15-9, with nine of the shots from the Lions on frame. The eight saves from Hall on Sunday marked the fourth time in five games the sophomore has accumulated at least six saves.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a Friday fixture at Hofstra on Friday, September 10.
