Two Second-Half Goals Propel No. 25 Hofstra to 2-0 Win over Bison Women’s Soccer

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – Amanda Ebbesson and Miri Taylor scored second-half goals, both on the finishing end of Lucy Shepherd crosses, as 25th-ranked Hofstra upended Bucknell 2-0 in non-conference action Friday afternoon at breezy Hofstra Soccer Stadium.
The Pride (6-1-0) were the highest-scoring team in the country last spring, and they entered Friday's game averaging three goals per game, but the Bison became only the second team this season to keep Hofstra scoreless in the first half of a game.
In fact, it was the Bison (2-4-1) who had the best chances early in the match. Hofstra goalkeeper Skyler Kuzmich came off her line to make a big save on Paige Temple just 50 seconds into the game, after the Bison forward was played in on a nicely weighted pass from fellow freshman Teresa Deda. Kuzmich made an even tougher save on the 10-minute mark, a diving stop to her right on Rylee Donaldson's left-footed attempt.
The fast-paced action went end-to-end early in the contest, and just 30 seconds after Donaldson nearly put the Bison in front, Hofstra was awarded a penalty the other way. Ebbesson ran on to a long ball over the top and was tripped up as goalkeeper Jenna Hall charged well off her line. The contact appeared to come just outside the penalty area, but that became moot when Shepherd sailed her spot kick over the bar.
In the 36th minute, Hofstra's Louise Hayden just missed the top corner after dribbling into space at the top of the area. In the final minute of the half, Bucknell substitute forward Kalli Wethern got a half-step in behind the defense but had the ball poked away from behind before she could get off a shot.
Hofstra put the Bison under pressure for the majority of the second half, and the Pride cashed in twice on balls played into the area from the right flank. First it was Ebbessen in the 53rd minute with a one-time volley of Shepherd's service.
Then with just under 12 minutes left in the match, Emily Rose won a ball in the center of the park and played Shepherd down the right side. Her delivery took a high bounce off the turf, but Taylor was able to slice a first-time shot just inside the left post for her sixth goal in seven games this season.
Hofstra finished with a 16-4 shot advantage, including 7-0 in the second half. Hall made six saves for the Bison, while Kuzmich had four for the Pride, whose only loss this season was a 2-1 road setback at No. 7 Penn State.
After playing its last four games on the road, Bucknell returns home on Sunday to face Rider. Game time is 1 p.m. at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium, with live streaming on ESPN+.
