Women's Soccer Scores Twice Late to Upend Rider, 3-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Paige Temple scored a first-half golazo, and after an unfortunate second-half own goal, Kelley Francis and Rylee Donaldson hit the back of the net in the final 11 minutes to send the Bucknell women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Rider on Sunday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Bucknell heads into the start of Patriot League play with a 3-4-1 record after setting a season scoring high on Sunday. While the Bison received a pair of goals from freshmen in Temple and Francis, their classmate Teresa Deda was all over the scoresheet with assists on all three goals. Deda was one shy of the school record for assists in a game, set by Lisa Gibbons in 1993.
"I told the team after the game that as we head into Patriot League play you just need to find a way to win the game," said head coach Kelly Cook. "That's what we did today. We didn't play great at times, but the own goal seemed to wake us up a little bit, and I was proud of the response after that. It's great to finish on a positive note heading into Navy."
Temple gave the Bison a 1-0 lead with a wonder strike from about 30 yards out. After some combo passing from Deda and Leanne Engemann on the left side, Temple took a touch infield and launched a perfectly placed shot over goalkeeper Ellie Sciancalepore into the top right corner.
The Bison received some quality play from the substitutes in the late stages of the first half. Hannah Stuck missed the far post by mere inches, and Kalli Wethern found a couple of looks at goal after some nice build-up play.
Bucknell took that 1-0 lead to the locker room, but just 10 minutes after the resumption of play Rider equalized when a ball played in from the left side was mis-hit by a Bison defender into the back of her own net.
Rider had another good scoring chance three minutes later on a well-executed corner kick, but Hannah Freeman's close-range attempt went over the bar.
Bucknell regained the lead in the 79th minute. Deda carried the ball a good 40 yards down the field and was able to get a shot away from the top right edge of the 6-yard box. Sciancalepore made a diving save, but Francis was there to collect and slot a shot off the left post and in.
The Bison grabbed an insurance goal in the 84th after Petie Nessetta won back a ball near midfield. She picked out Deda, who slipped a pass to Temple, who played in Donaldson for the breakaway finish.
Bucknell finished with a 22-14 shot advantage in the wide-open affair. Bison goalkeeper Jenna Hall had another strong game with nine saves, while Sciancalepore made seven for Rider. Donaldson and Francis led the Bison with four shots apiece, while Wethern and Stuck had three each off the bench.
Bucknell's first two Patriot League contests will be at home, starting next Saturday against Navy at 2 p.m.
