LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell men's tennis team won four of its six singles matches and two of three doubles tilts as Bucknell Invitational first-round action wrapped up on Friday evening at the Varsity Tennis Courts. Ryan Jurist, Nick Mueller and Tim Zelikovsky all won in the top singles flight, and all three were victorious in the No. 1 doubles flight as well.
Jurst, the team's lone senior who is back in action for the first time since the early spring of 2020, spotted the first set to Christian Banti of Saint Francis (Pa.), but Jurist stormed back to take the match 4-6, 6-3, 10-6.
Mueller and Zelikovsky had a much easier time against their Red Flash counterparts. Mueller, the team's winningest player in the abbreviated spring 2021 campaign, rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 verdict over Daniel Vinces. Zelikovsky topped Marc Fuste 6-2, 6-2.
In the second singles flight, freshman Nicolas Grunig picked up his first collegiate victory, 6-3, 6-4 over Niagara's Gurustat Makkar.
Jurist came back later in the day to team with Michael Owen for a 6-4 doubles win over Banti and Sebastian Pinos of Saint Francis. In the bottom half of the first doubles flight, Mueller and Zelikovsky earned a 6-1 win over Niagara's Manuel Alonso and Jorge Sedeno.
The three-day tournament resumes on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
