Bucknell at a Glance
- The red-hot Bison were cooled off a bit on Saturday night in Hamilton, N.Y., as Colgate ended Bucknell's three-match winning streak with a 3-0 verdict. Now the Bison have another bust week with two road games on tap at Princeton and Holy Cross. The Princeton game on Tuesday is Bucknell's final non-league game of the regular season.
- The loss dropped the Bison out of sole possession of first place in the Patriot League into a three-way tie for second place along with Colgate and Boston University. Lehigh at 2-0-1 leads that trio of 2-1 teams by one point.
- Bucknell piled up 10 goals in that three-match winning streak, which consisted of victories over Rider (3-1), two-time defending Patriot League champion Navy (4-2) and American (3-0). That marked the most goals scored by Bucknell in any three-game stretch since 2017.
- Despite not scoring on Saturday at Colgate, the Bison remain the Patriot League leader with 17 goals on the season.
- Bucknell also boasts the Patriot League leaders in goals (Rylee Donaldson 6), points (Donaldson 13) and assists (Teresa Deda 6).
- Bison midfielders Deda (6), Abby Gearhart (4) and Kenar Gelman (4) have combined for 14 assists this season.
- Freshmen strikers Paige Temple and Kelley Francis both have three goals. Newcomers Deda, Temple and Francis have combined for seven goals and seven assists and are a big reason why Bucknell has more goals already this season (17) than in the previous two combined (15).
- Donaldson has enjoyed a breakout junior season for the Bison. She entered the year with one career goal but exploded for six in the first 10 games this fall. In addition to leading the Patriot League in goals and points, Donaldson also paces the PL in shot attempts with 31.
- The Bison prepped for league play with a tough non-conference schedule that featured two top-25 teams in West Virginia and Hofstra, a perennial MAAC contender in Monmouth, and a strong Ivy League foe in Columbia. Princeton was ranked in the top 25 earlier this season and is still receiving votes in the national poll.
- Bucknell graduated five players from last year's squad that finished 1-2-2: Alex Catanzarite, Chloe Christakos, Sarah Hazard, Bri Kropinack and Jenna Marek. Christakos, a center back, was a Second Team All-Patriot League selection in the spring of 2021.
- Junior midfielder Petie Nassetta joined Christakos on the All-Patriot League squad in the spring. Nassetta was a Third Team choice.
- Bucknell was picked ninth in the Patriot League preseason poll, ahead of American and behind Navy, Boston University, Colgate, Army, Loyola, Lehigh, Lafayette and Holy Cross.
- Kelly Cook is in her seventh season on the Bison sideline. Cook owns a 57-46-11 (.547) overall record at Bucknell, including a 32-15-6 (.660) mark in Patriot League play. Cook knows the Patriot League very well, as she was a two-year captain and three-time Second Team All-Patriot League selection at Colgate, where she recorded 27 goals and 23 assists in her career. She ranked in the top 10 in program history in career points (77) and assists. As a junior in 2004, Cook (then Kelly Kuss) was named Patriot League Tournament MVP after leading the Raiders to the league title, and then her team knocked off Arizona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the first NCAA win in school and league history.
- Six Bison will be returning to their home state of New Jersey on Tuesday, including sophomore back Lea Tarzy, who hails from nearby Medford and attended the Hun School in Princeton.
- There will also be a homecoming this weekend for Berlin, Mass., native Alana Carlucci, whose hometown is only about a 20-minute drive from the Holy Cross campus in Worcester.
- The Tigers are 7-1-1 on the season and sit just outside the national top-25 after being ranked as high as No. 22 earlier this season.
- In back-to-back games earlier this month, Princeton tied No. 8 Georgetown 1-1 and beat No. 9 Rutgers 4-3, with both results coming on the road. The Tigers' lone loss was a 2-0 setback to a No. 23 Hofstra on Sept. 16. The Pride also defeated Bucknell by the same scoreline.
- Since that loss, Princeton has posted a pair of 4-0 routs of Delaware and Yale. The latter came in the Ivy League opener on Saturday, with all four goals coming in the second half.
- Princeton has outscored its opponents 23-8 and outshot them 142-74 on the season. A balanced attack has seen 13 different Tigers score goals, led by Heather MacNab, Tatum Gee, Gabi Suarez and Lily Bryant with three each. MacNab also has six assists, and her 12 points are fourth-most in the Ivy League.
- Grace Barbara has started eight of the nine games in goal, and she has made 20 saves with eight goals against. Backup Tyler McCamey has made three appearances with one start and has yet to concede a goal.
- The Ivy League did not participate in 2020-21 due to COVID-19, but Princeton has won two of the previous three Ivy League championships.
- Seventh-year head coach Sean Driscoll has led the Tigers to three Ivy League titles, three NCAA Tournament berths and four NCAA wins, including a trip to the national quarterfinals in 2017 when the team was ranked as high as No. 7 nationally.
- Bucknell has a win and a draw from its 10 all-time meetings with Princeton.
- The victory was a 4-1 home win in 2007, with Kelsey Johnson and soon-to-be Hall-of-Fame inductee Jennifer Dervarics scoring two goals apiece.
- The draw was a 1-1 affair between two very good teams in 2016. Kendall Ham scored for the Bison, who were 13-1-2 at the time and would go on to win the Patriot League title soon after. Defending Ivy League champion Princeton was 9-4-2 at the time.
- The last meeting between the two teams was a 1-0 Princeton win at Princeton in 2018. Gabi Juarez scored the lone goal just 2:14 into the match.
- The Crusaders will have a full week of rest when Bucknell comes to Worcester on Sunday. Holy Cross fell at Lehigh 2-1 this past Sunday, extending their winless streak to five (0-4-1).
- Holy Cross' lone victory this season was a 3-0 rout of Bryant at home on Sept. 5.
- Despite a 1-9-1 record, the Crusaders have scored some goals this season. They have nine in their last six games and 12 in 11 matches on the year. The issue has been at the other end of the pitch, where Holy Cross has conceded 31 times.
- Katie Quinn leads the team with four goals on the season, including one at Lehigh on Sunday. Colleen McIlvenna has two goals and a team-high three assists. All three of those helpers came in a wild 5-3 loss to Boston College on Sept. 12.
- Olivia Dubin has started all 11 games in goal and leads the Patriot League with 68 saves. Bucknell's Jenna Hall has the second-most with 53.
- Holy Cross went 1-3 in the abbreviated spring 2021 season, with the win coming against Lafayette. That came on the heels of one of the Crusaders' best seasons in team history. In 2019, they went 5-4-8 overall and 3-1-5 in Patriot League play and qualified for the league tournament for the first time in 19 years.
- Head coach Kyle Bak is in his second season in charge of the Crusaders after six campaigns as the top assistant at Providence.
- Bucknell is 21-6-2 all-time against Holy Cross, but the Crusaders ended Bucknell's long run of dominance with a 3-0 win in Worcester in the final game of the 2019 regular season. That result clinched a Patriot League Tournament berth for Holy Cross while knocking Bucknell out of the postseason.
- Prior to that game, Bucknell had won 14 straight against Holy Cross by a combined 36-6 margin.
- Bucknell is 11-3-1 all-time in Worcester.
- The two teams have met just once in the postseason, a 1-0 Holy Cross win in the 2000 Patriot League semifinals in Hamilton, N.Y.
- After the two road fixtures this week, Bucknell returns home to face Lafayette on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
