Perez-Pelaez Nets Late Game-Winner as Bison Men’s Soccer Beats St. Bonaventure, 2-1

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Eddie Perez-Pelaez cracked a header into the back of the next with 5:01 remaining in regulation to lift Bucknell to a 2-1 victory over St. Bonaventure in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday evening at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Piping-hot sophomore Jordan Miller also scored – his fourth goal in the last three games – to help the Bison to a second straight win in a 48-hour span. Bucknell, which also scored late to beat Mount St. Mary's on the road on Friday night, is now 2-3 on the season with one more non-league game coming up on Wednesday before Patriot League play kicks off next weekend.
"I was very pleased that we didn't stop working even after conceding the goal," said interim head coach Matt Brown. "That's two games in a row now where in the latter stages of the game the guys came on strong. That's a good habit the guys are developing, they just keep going and going and going. I thought we controlled the game in the first half, but we challenged them to be a bit more clinical in front of goal. The guys are really invested. We talked early in the day about keeping us on an upward trajectory, and we showed enough today to do that."
Playing their first home match of the season, the Bison came out of the gates strong and saw almost all of the ball in the first half. Bucknell piled up a 13-0 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes and had several great looks on set pieces before finally cashing in just past the half-hour mark.
Senior co-captain Patrick O'Hara got on the ball on the left flank, dribbled right at two defenders and then threaded a perfect pass to Miller for the left-footed finish. Miller scored his first collegiate goal at Saint Peter's last week, he added a brace in the win at Mount St. Mary's and then made it four in three the opening tally on Sunday.
Bucknell was inches away from a 2-0 cushion just seven minutes into the second half. Matthew Owusu saw his shot tipped by goalkeeper Trevor Wilson solidly into the left post. Perez-Pelaez redirected the rebound back toward goal, but Wilson scrambled back to slap it off the line.
The Bison shot advantage stood at 15-0 at that point, but St. Bonaventure only needed one to draw even. The Bonnies' initial shot of the match came in the 55th minute from Joshua Pulla, and it found the back of the net after a pass through the back line from Fredrik Hansen.
Pulla, who now has a goal in three straight games, nearly added a second 15 minutes later when he found space at the top of the area, but his turning shot sailed over the bar.
Bison freshman center back Gabe Dahlin had three good chances on set pieces, and his rocket with 10 minutes to play off a Colin Eifert throw was parried away by Wilson.
Bucknell finally cashed in one of those restarts on its fifth corner kick of the night. Chris Masur's delivery found Perez-Pelaez in the middle of the box, and he smashed a clean header into the back of the net.
The final shot margin ended up at 21-5, with Miller leading all players with four attempts. Wilson made seven saves for the Bonnies, while Bucknell's Bennett Schwartz made one.
It's back on the road for the Bison this week, as they travel to Saint Francis (Pa.) for a 4 p.m. contest on Wednesday before opening up Patriot League play next Saturday at Lafayette at 5 p.m.
