LORETTO, Pa. – Jordan Miller scored yet again for Bucknell, but Saint Francis (Pa.) registered a goal in each half to go up 2-0 and then held on to win 2-1 in a non-league men's soccer game Wednesday afternoon at Stokes SoccerPlex. The Bison saw their two-game winning streak come to an end and now will turn their focus to the start of Patriot League play at Lafayette this weekend.
Bucknell (2-4) had a good early chance on a redirect from Eddie Perez-Pelaez off a long free kick, but it was the Red Flash (2-2) getting on the board first in the 22nd minute. The ball pinged around in tight quarters in the Bison box before leaking free to Lorenz Ender for a one-time finish.
Saint Francis doubled its lead about four minutes into the second half. Patrick Heron dribbled into the area and fired a shot into the arm of a Bison defender, and a penalty kick was awarded. Piet Wesling converted from the spot for a 2-0 Red Flash lead.
Bucknell applied its best pressure of the day in the latter stages of the second half, and the Bison were rewarded when Miller tallied his fifth goal in the last four games with 4:03 remaining in regulation. Andrew Mazza played a ball over the top, Patrick O'Hara flicked a header on to Miller, who smashed the ball into the back of the net from about 10 yards out.
Miller, the Patriot League goal-scoring leader, became the first Bison to score in four consecutive games since Jesse Klug in 2015.
Less than a minute after the goal the Bison played another promising ball into the box, but the play was broken up by a Red Flash defender at the last second.
Goalkeeper Bennett Schwartz had a strong game for the Bison. He finished with five saves, including a couple of tough ones. He dove to his right to smother a low shot from Jeff Thielman late in the first half, and in the 68th minute he stoned Heron with a kick save on a clean breakaway.
Bucknell outshot Saint Francis 12-10 and led 8-1 in corner kicks. Jonas Dieseler tallied six saves for the Red Flash.
Bucknell opens up Patriot League play on Saturday at Lafayette. Game time is 5 p.m. at Oaks Stadium, and the contest can be seen on ESPN+.
