LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell softball hosted the first-place Boston U. Terriers at Becker Field on Saturday and lost both games of the doubleheader by a 2-1 margin. The Bison scored late runs in the sixth inning of both games and were tied at 1-1 heading into the final inning of the second game, but Boston's pitching limited Bucknell to just three hits on the day.
Bucknell moved to 10-7 overall with the losses and 7-3 in league play. The Terriers improved to 22-2 overall and 11-1 in the Patriot League.
The two teams square off in Lewisburg again on Sunday with the doubleheader beginning at noon.
Game One: Boston U. 2, Bucknell 1
Bucknell had trouble at the plate in game one and wasn't able to post its first hit until the sixth inning, but the Bison did have baserunners throughout the game and had several chances at more runs.
The Terriers got the scoring started in the first after getting their first two runners on with a hit-by-pitch and a single up the middle of the infield. Another single two batters later put Boston up 1-0. The lead would grow to 2-0 in the top of the third when the Terriers put together a single and a double with two outs.
Boston added three more hits in the fourth and fifth, but the Bison held runners in check and allowed no more runs throughout the game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Rivait erased Boston's no-hitter with a bunt single, and an error on the same play put a runner on third base with one out. Chase Knapp collected an RBI on the next at-bat with a sacrifice fly to center field that made it a 2-1 game.
Bucknell nearly rallied in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, loading the bases with just one out thanks to three consecutive walks. A strikeout and a ground out on the next two at-bats put an end to the comeback effort.
Sophomore Kaiya Burton pitched a complete game and struck out three while allowing 10 hits. Boston's Ali DuBois earned the win with nine strikeouts and no earned runs.
Game Two: Boston U. 2, Bucknell 1
The second game began in similar fashion to the first with the Terriers jumping out to a 1-0 lead after another hit-by-pitch and single up the middle. This time, however, the deficit sat at one until the sixth inning as Kelly Toomey went to work in the circle. Boston managed just one hit during middle three innings.
Both of Bucknell's hits came in the bottom of the sixth. Knapp got it started with a one-out double to right field, her fourth double of the season. Taylor Wolfgang followed it up with a single to short stop, allowing Knapp to cross home and even the game at 1-1.
The Terriers were quick to respond with three hits in the top of the seventh that put Bucknell behind 2-1 once again. This time, the Bison were unable to get a runner on the bottom half of the inning and Boston collected its second one-run victory of the afternoon.
Toomey went all seven while striking out six and allowing seven Terrier hits. DuBois pitched the last 3.2 innings and picked up her second win of the day.
