RESULTS
VILLANOVA, Pa. – Led by a 2-under-par 68 from sophomore Blake Wisdom, the Bucknell men's golf team posted a 282 team score on Monday and sits in second place out of 15 teams after the first of two rounds of the Wildcat Invitational, hosted by Villanova at Radnor Valley Country Club.
Bucknell's 2-over 282 composite trails only St. John's, which parlayed a pair of 66s from Jack Simon and Douglas Beney into a 3-under 277. The Bison are seven strokes clear of Villanova and Drexel, who are tied for third at 289, with Lafayette, Delaware and Rider two further back at 291.
Bucknell counted four scores of 73 or better in round one, led by Wisdom's season-best 68. Wisdom made five birdies, tied for the most in the field, and he shook off a couple of early bogeys to play his final 15 holes in 4-under.
Wisdom, who was last week's Patriot League Golfer of the Week, sits alone in third place on the individual leaderboard, trailing only the pair from St. John's. Lafayette's Brendan Cronin posted a 69 and is the only other player in the field in red figures heading into Tuesday's final round.
Bucknell's six-man contingent rang up 14 birdies on Monday, second only to St. John's 17. Jackson Bussell tallied three birdies on his way to an even-par round of 70. Bussell sits in a tie for fifth place at the midway point, and Chris Tanabe (T-9th) is also in the top 10 after posting a 71.
The Bison also counted a 73 from Jack Gardner, one better than teammate Jason Lohwater, who shot 74.
Bucknell took particular advantage of the par-5 seventh hole, with five of the team's six players – Wisdom, Bussell, Tanabe, Gardner and Dylan Ford – making birdie there.
The Bison are trying to continue a strong spring season that has seen them record a victory and two runner-up finishes in three events.
