LEWISBURG, Pa. – It was a record-setting day for Bucknell senior Casey Morrow, who made five birdies on the way to a 1-under-par 69 in the opening round of the Bucknell Invitational on Saturday. Morrow matched Bridget Wilcox's school record for low 18 holes and also posted Bucknell's best-ever competitive round at the Bucknell Golf Club.
Morrow's big day helped Bucknell take the first-round lead over Saint Francis (Pa.), La Salle and Niagara. In fact, both of Bucknell's five-player squads bested the rest of the field with 308 team marks. Saint Francis is next at 327, followed by La Salle at 339 and Niagara at 346.
Bucknell players posted the three best rounds of the day. Morrow's 69 gives her a five-shot lead on teammate Tatum McKelvey, who played the final six holes in 3-under. Sun Woo Jeon is one further back after shooting 75.
Morrow, Kelsey Yi (79), Morgan Sohosky (79), Morgan Hennessy (81) and Cristina Canales (81) made up the team's top group. McKelvey, Jeon, Kayla Yi (78), Erin Holmes (81) and Sahana Paravantavida (82) teed it up in the "B" group.
Morrow birdied the par-5 ninth hole to make the turn in 1-over 37, then she fired a 2-under 32 on the inward nine. After four straight pars she made back-to-back birdies at 14 and 15. After a bogey at 16, Morrow bounced right back with a birdie at 17 and a par at 18 to finish in red numbers.
Bucknell's only other sub-70 round was Wilcox's 3-under-par 69 at the Penn State Blue Course in the fall of 2010. Morrow posted the seventh sub-par round in team history and the first on Bucknell's home course. Katie Jurenovich, Kasha Scott and Lindsay Dodovich all shot 70 at BGC.
The second and final round gets underway at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
