LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell women's track & field team completed its first indoor meet of the 2021-22 season on Saturday at the Bison Opener. Three athletes grabbed first-place finishes, while seven others finished top three in their respective individual events. Additionally, the Bison grabbed the top three spots in the 800m. The meet began on a high note Friday evening as senior Michaela Bracken set a new school record in the pentathlon for the first time since 2007.
"It was great to compete indoors once again after no indoor season at all last year, and to have nine other schools along with spectators just felt like a sense of normalcy," said head coach Kevin Donner. "I thought both teams competed very well, and I was especially pleased with the spirit and support that I saw among our entire program. We saw some great things from some people and will also identify some areas that we need to improve upon if we want our traditional balanced team. I'm going to dissect the results tonight and come up with a plan for our next meet in January. I like balanced teams in all the different event groups, and I saw that today."
Bucknell's Lucie Kubinski took first in the mile (5:25.83) after doing so in the 2019 Bison Opener as well. The senior finished nearly seven seconds ahead of the second-place finisher from Towson. Joining Kubinski with top finishes were fellow seniors Tara Lyons in the 800 (2:20.48) and Karly Forkerer in the 3,000 (10:05.97).
The Bison also garnered three second-place finishes on Saturday, earning runners-up status in the 200, the 300 and the 4x400. Junior Bridget Lalonde grabbed second in the 200m (26.14), junior Jessie Castellano took second in the 400m (58.56), and rookie Anna Posh earned second in the 800m (2:22.65) in her first collegiate indoor meet.
Bucknell posted the top three finishers in the 800 with sophomore Hailey Tabar coming in at third (2:23.10). Also placing third and joining Castellano among the top 400 finishers was junior Mackenzie Turner (59.49).
Turner, Castellano and Lalonde were accompanied by sophomore Meghan Quinn in the second-place finishing 4x400 team (3:57.76), which came in just ahead of Bucknell's second relay team of Posh, Lyons, Tabar, and Meredith Haberfield (4:11.86).
Quinn also posted an impressive showing in the 60m dash, placing fourth with a time of 7.73 to land third on Bucknell's all-time top ten list.
In the field events, Bucknell saw four athletes earn third-places finishes at the Gerhard Fieldhouse on Saturday. Junior Jennifer Scott placed third in pole vault (10-11.75), sophomore Hadley Zucker came in third in pole vault (10-11.75), tying with rookie teammate Karly Renn, and sophomore Siobhan O'Sullivan placed third in shot put with a person-best 43-09.00 mark.
Bucknell won't compete again until the Nittany Lion Challenge in State College, Pa. on Jan. 15, 2022. The Penn State meet kicks off a series of seven competitions slated before the Patriot League Championships in late February.
