Bison Student-Athletes Give Back to Local Community at Holiday Time

This fall, Bucknell student-athletes and staff were once again excited to find ways to engage in the local community. Around the Thanksgiving holiday, through the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's Community Service Committee, Bison teams participated in the Office of Civic Engagement's Turkey & Trimmings Initiative. Teams put together more than 40 baskets, which include items for an entire Thanksgiving meal for a family of four, including a gift card for a turkey purchase. This is the most baskets the Department of Athletics and Recreation has ever donated, and through campus-wide efforts, the university was able to provide Thanksgiving dinner to over 500 members of the local community.Â
In addition, SAAC and Bison Cares partnered with Weis Markets to collect donations towards the Turkey & Trimmings Thanksgiving initiative, and to help support the Lewisburg community. Shoppers at Weis were able to donate items such as canned goods, stuffing, potatoes, gift cards and more. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we were able to donate additional items to a local food bank & hospice care that serves low-income families.Â
To wrap up the semester, through the Giving Tree initiative, both SAAC and the Department of Athletics & Recreation were once again able to fully adopt two local agencies -- the Union County Children and Youth Agency and the Milton YMCA Daycare -- and complete all 40 gift requests. An additional 20 gift tags were completed for Children's Choice (a specialized community-based agency), CONCERN (an adoption agency), and Essex Place (affordable housing). SAAC once again took on this initiative and had a 100% team participation, each fulfilling at least one gift tag, with some teams satisfying as many as four gift requests. Coaches and staff members also contributed to the cause through the department's annual holiday party. In total, more than 60 gift tags were fulfilled, winter accessories (hats, gloves, scarves, etc.) were donated to the Union County Children and Youth Agency, and over $500 was raised in additional support for local agencies this holiday season.Â
Our student-athletes put together several no-sew fleece blankets for Project Linus, an organization that donates blankets to children ages infant to 18. The Central Susquehanna Valley Chapter serves multiple counties. Student-athletes, coaches and staff also put together holiday cards for residents at the Buffalo Valley Lutheran nursing home and for children at the Janet Weis Geisinger Children's hospital.Â
During the fall semester, Bucknell varsity athletics teams completed over 1,200 hours of community service, and we look forward to continued engagement in the community in 2022!
