LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team led 5-1 at the half, but Navy used a strong second half to come back and take a one-goal win over the Bison, 8-7, at Kinney Natatorium on Sunday morning. The Bison then rebounded in the second game of the day to take a 16-8 win over Johns Hopkins.
Game One: Navy 8, Bucknell 7
After a narrowly-contested first quarter in which the Bison and Mids were tied at one, Bucknell scored four straight to seemingly take control of the game in the second. After Navy tied the game with 3:08 left in the first quarter, Bucknell kept the Mids off the board for the next 11 minutes as Walker Butler, Doruk Ozar, Andu Vlasceanu, and Josh Yardley scored four goals to end the half, with Yardley's goal the exclamation mark to an excellent first half by the Bison with 26 seconds to go.
However, Navy battled back in the second, scoring four goals over a 2:30 span to tie the game at six. Bucknell managed to stop Navy's run to end the third, as Jack Lewis came up with a big goal with 40 seconds left to go in the third to help Bucknell regain the lead. Navy tied the game once more with 6:22 in the second, eventually taking the lead for good on a goal by Tommy McKnew with 1:12 remaining.
Bucknell had a chance to tie the game out of a timeout with 20 seconds on the clock, but the Mids managed to force a turnover on the final possession to hang on for their second one-goal win over the Bison on the season.
Vlasceanu led all scorers with three goals, while Ethan Jones, Yardley, Butler, and Lewis each scored one. Adrien Touzot made ten saves in the cage for the Bison.
Game Two: Bucknell 16, Johns Hopkins 8
Bucknell rebounded in the second game of the day against a hot Johns Hopkins team that knocked off 15th-ranked Fordham on Saturday, handing the Rams their first MAWPC loss of the season.
The Blue Jays started the game with a goal to open the game at the 6:24 mark of the first, but it was all Bucknell the rest of the first half as it rattled off seven straight goals just in the first quarter. Five different players contributed to the run in Ozar, Vlasceanu, J. Yardley, Hasan Mogultay, and Matt Ryckman. Bucknell continued that momentum in the second half, adding five more unanswered tallies en route to a 12-1 lead at the halftime horn.
Bucknell cruised in the second half en route to taking a 16-8 win over the Blue Jays and securing a .500 or better record at home for the 20th-straight season.
Ten Bison registered a point in the win, with J. Yardley leading the way with four goals. Jack Lewis scored three in the win, while Ryckman picked up his second multi-goal outing in three games by scoring a brace. Vlasceanu, Ozar, and Shay Gillearn each scored a pair of goals.
Touzot and Jack Otto split time in the cage, making four saves each in the win. Touzot posted an impressive showing in his 16 minutes, limiting the Blue Jays to just the one goal in the first half.
Bucknell will now look ahead to a road matchup at Mount St. Mary's to close the regular season on Sunday, November 14.
