EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team defeated Mount Saint Mary's 11-5 in the final game of the regular season as it prepares for the upcoming MAWPC Championships next weekend.
Bucknell trailed early in the contest after The Mount took a 1-0 lead just under two minutes into the game, but a goal just 30 seconds later from Andu Vlasceanu tied the game at the 5:36 mark of the first quarter, and helped spark a 5-0 run that extended all the way to the 6:44 mark of the second quarter. Vlasceanu scored four of Bucknell's five goals during the run, with Walker Butler adding Bucknell's final goal of the run to take a commanding 5-1 lead.
Mount Saint Mary's responded with two goals of its own over the next six minutes, keeping Bucknell off the board for over six minutes as it pulled within two once more. However, Bucknell's Matt Ryckman ended the scoring drought with 36 seconds to go in the first half to restore a three-goal cushion.
Mount Saint Mary's pulled within two once more in the third at 7-5, but that was the closest that The Mount would manage to get as Bucknell locked down the homestanding Mountaineers for the final 13:18 of the contest. Bucknell shut out MSM for the rest of the game, adding four unanswered goals courtesy of Doruk Ozar, Jack Lewis, Vlasceanu, and Butler to take an 11-5 win.
Bucknell has now held its opposition to under eight goals for the third consecutive game, and in five of its last six outings.
Vlasceanu led all scorers with four goals, while Butler and Ryckman each added multiple goals.
Bucknell will now look ahead as the final pairings for the first round of the MAWPC Championships are announced later this week. Bucknell will play on Friday, November 19 at a time to be determined in Annapolis, Md.
