BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Bucknell women's cross country team finished 14th among a field of 27 schools competing at the 2021 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Friday afternoon, and senior Ashlyn Ramos earned All-Region status by placing 10th overall out of 193 competitors to lead the Bison.
"For the first time this year, our women's team was aggressive at the start which might have hurt us in later stages of the race, but I was pleased with the effort. Ramos ran great to finish 10th and earn All-Region. We will know in the next 24 hours if she makes the NCAA Championships as an individual," said head coach Kevin Donner. "Basically, if Villanova gets an at-large berth as a team, Ashlyn would be the third individual, and she will run nationals. If Villanova does not make it, she will be the 6th individual and will not be going. Regardless, she has had a great cross country career for us."
The Bison totaled 363 points to land at 14, finishing a spot behind La Salle and three spots ahead of fellow Patriot League team Lehigh. Navy finished the highest among Patriot League opponents at seventh overall.
Ramos (20:33.9), who earned runner-up honors at the Patriot League Championships back on Oct. 31, paced the Bison on the 6k course and made up two spots over the final stretch after coming in at 12th by the two-mile mark. She was the highest-placing runner among Patriot League teams at the meet with Navy's Elizabeth Sullivan finishing 25th. The Sammamish, Wash. native placed 54th in 2019.
Senior Emily Deschler (22:15.0) placed 68th at the meet, maintaining her position after reaching the two-mile mark. Deschler placed 28th at the Patriot League Championships earlier in the season. Coming in four spots behind Deschler was first-year Lauren Trapani (72nd, 22:19.8), who finished 29th overall at the league championships.
The fourth finisher for the Orange & Blue was sophomore Ally Clarke (104th, 22:56.7), and senior Nora Bennett rounded out the scoring runners for the Bison at 109th (23:01.9).
Also competing for Bucknell was senior Karly Forker (23:49.4) and sophomore Abby Paczewski (23:52.0), who finished 152nd and 154th, respectively.
Georgetown came in first at the meet with a score of 43, with two runners finishing in the top three and five in the top 20. West Virginia (67), Villanova (105), Princeton (122), and Penn State (159) were each among the top five teams at the meet as well. Each ranked in the top five in the Mid-Atlantic Region entering the meet.
31 schools compete in the team portion of the NCAA Championships, with 18 bids (top two in each region) along with 13 at-large bids. The top four individual finishers from each region earn automatic bids to the NCAA Championships, with an additional 38 individuals earning qualification that are not already members of the qualifying teams.
