BALTIMORE, Md. – Bucknell volleyball concluded its 2021 season at Reitz Arena Friday evening, falling 3-0 to Loyola (Md.). The Bison led much of the way in the second set, which was their strongest of the evening, but 22 attack errors against 21 kills resulted in a -.009 hitting percentage and gave way to the Greyhound victory.
Sandra Korusiewicz and sophomore Allie Lopez finished with six kills apiece, while rookie Jordan Hardy posted 16 digs. Sophomore setter Sarah Ramirez led the team in assists with 12. The six kills by Korusiewicz were a career-best for the junior.
Loyola jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first, and although Bucknell narrowed the gap at 4-3, the Greyhounds used a 5-0 run in the middle of the set to take a commanding 14-6 advantage. Loyola saw another 5-0 run later in the set and posted four blocks in the opening frame to cruise to a 25-12 win, which was its largest margin of victory in the match.
Loyola was strong out of the gates in set two as well as it claimed four of the first five points, but Bucknell eventually took its first lead of the match at 6-5 and would maintain it through most of the set. Trailing 18-16, the Greyhounds posted back-to-back kills followed by back-to-back service aces to go up 20-18. The Bison were able to tie it at 20-all, but Loyola ended the frame on a 5-1 run to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bison saw their only two blocks of the match in set two and limited the home team to a .068 hitting percentage. Two of Bucknell's three service aces were in the second set as well.
Bucknell committed seven more attack errors in the third set, and after a 4-0 start for Loyola, Bucknell was never able to grab a lead. Trailing 16-8, Bucknell made one last attempt at a comeback with a 3-0 run that cut the deficit to 16-11. The Bison were unable to tie it, however, as the Greyhounds went on to win the third 25-16.
