LEWISBURG, Pa. – Rylee Donaldson's league-leading eighth goal of the campaign helped secure Bucknell all three points and remain in first place in the Patriot League standings in a 1-0 win over Lafayette on Saturday afternoon.
The Bison started the game brightly, and continued to put pressure on the Leopards for most of the 90 minutes en route to taking 26 shots in total, ten of which were on target. Donaldson had a great chance for the Bison just four minutes into the game, but a great save from the Leopards' Lindsay Dewar kept Bucknell's striker off the board momentarily.
Donaldson was once again involved at the 10:04 mark of the first half, using her speed to get in behind the defense before dragging her shot just wide of the post.
The junior would not be denied a third time in the first half however, as senior defender Claire Mensi launched a long clearance from the top of the 18 that soared over the halfway line. Donaldson raced onto the ball past two Leopard defenders and finished at the near post for her eighth goal of the season as the Bison broke the deadlock.
Lafayette did manage to create a good opportunity to equalize in the final five minutes of the first half after a scrum in the box, but Bucknell goalkeeper Jenna Hall was positioned well to palm a hard shot from Lafayette's Lauren Cunningham over the bar to keep the game 1-0 in favor of the Bison.
Bucknell continued to mount the pressure on the Leopards in the second half, with Abby Gearhart creating Bucknell's first big chance of the half as her shot from outside of the 18 rattled the crossbar just five minutes into the second half.
The Bison had another great look at goal when Gearhart was brought down in the box and the Bison were awarded a penalty in the 65th minute. Gearhart sent a low hard shot to the keeper's left, but the Leopards' Natalie Neumann, who entered the game at halftime, made a terrific save to keep the deficit at one.
Bucknell had several more decent looks at goal in the final 20 minutes, but in the end the one goal was enough as Bucknell kept its fifth clean sheet of the year and improved to 5-1-1 at Emmitt Field this season.
The 26 shots by the Bison were the second-highest attempted by the team this season in a game, and it marks the fifth time Bucknell has eclipsed 20 or more shots in a contest this year.
Bucknell will next travel to Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday, October 13 for a 7 p.m. fixture.
