Donaldson Scores Again, but Women’s Soccer Settles for 1-1 Draw at Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. – Bucknell forward Rylee Donaldson tallied her Patriot League-leading ninth goal of the season midway through the first half, but Sarah Bayer put Loyola on level terms 10 minutes later, and the two teams finished in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Bucknell (7-6-2, 4-1-1 PL) entered the night in a tie for first place in the Patriot League with Boston University, while Loyola (6-5-3, 3-1-2 PL) sat in third place just two points back. Boston University defeated Holy Cross 3-0 to take sole possession of the lead, setting up a battle for first place on Saturday when the Terriers travel to Emmitt Field to face the Bison.
Bucknell controlled play for much of the first half, taking nine of the game's first 10 shots. Donaldson cashed in on one of them, coming off one of Bucknell's 14 corner kicks in the match.
Teresa Deda's inswinger from the left side was punched straight down by Loyola goalkeeper Paige Kim. Donaldson was the first to the ball, and she fired a shot on the short-hop through a defender stationed on the left post and into the back of the net.
Deda was credited with an assist on the play, giving her a league-high eight on the season. Deda tied Maddie Mulford (2016), Caitlin Holtz (2008) and Lisa Gibbons (1992) for second-most assists in a season in Bucknell history. Gibbons holds the record with 19 assists during a record-setting 1994 season in which she also scored 19 goals.
Shortly after the Donaldson goal, the Bison had a flurry of four consecutive corner kicks. Abby Gearhart had a volley tipped deflected over the bar and then another cleared off the line by a Loyola defender. On the fourth corner, Hannah Stuck put a header on a goal but right at Sim.
Loyola's survival of that sequence proved big a few minutes later when Sarah Bayer shoved off a Bison defender to win a long ball played into the box, and she finished with her left foot to tie the game at 1-all.
It was only the third time this season that Bucknell allowed an equalizer after scoring first. The first came in a 3-1 loss to No. 12 West Virginia, and the other came against Rider in a game the Bison ultimately won 3-1.
Bayer nearly had another goal in the second half when a free kick service fell at her feet, but Jenna Hall went low to make her best save of the night. With five minutes to go in regulation, center back Brooke Tracey came to the rescue, heading a ball off the goal line to deny Alex Searing on a corner kick.
Bucknell dealt with a late corner kick to force overtime, and then the Bison outshot Loyola 4-1 in extra time. Their best look came on a well-struck free kick from distance from Petie Nassetta, but Sim went up to make the save on a shot headed for the top right corner.
The final stats favored Bucknell, with a 22-7 shot advantage and a 14-4 edge in corner kicks. Sim made five saves and Hall two.
Bucknell and Boston University will meet at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Emmitt Field. Senior Day festivities will precede the contest, which will air live on ESPN+.
