LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Patriot League's top two teams entering Match Day No. 7 played a thriller on Saturday at Emmitt Field. Abby Gearhart scored a pair of goals for Bucknell, but Boston University answered each time, the last coming with 2:31 left in regulation, to secure a 2-2 draw and maintain its two-point lead atop the standings.
Bucknell is now 4-1-2 in Patriot League play (7-6-3 overall) after its second tie of the week. The Terriers (9-5-2, 5-1-1) moved to 16 points, two in front of Bucknell and Loyola with two regular-season matches remaining. The Bison and Greyhounds tied 1-1 in Baltimore on Wednesday, and Loyola defeated Lafayette on Saturday to join the Bison on 14 points.
Bucknell thoroughly controlled the opening 45 minutes against Boston University, outshooting the Terriers 11-2 in the first half while nabbing the game's opening goal from Gearhart in the 25th minute.
Kenar Gelman one-timed a left-footed pass down the left sideline, playing Teresa Deda into acres of space. Deda sent in a low cross to Gearhart, who flashed across the edge of the 6-yard box and redirected the ball through goalkeeper Gretchen Bennett and across the line.
That made the shot count 10-1 at the time, but the Terriers managed to flip the field early in the second half. Just over four minutes into the second stanza, Marli Rajacich streaked down the right flank, and her cross was headed in by Geovanna Pereira.
Jenna Hall made a good save lunging to her right to deny Sophia Woodland in the 70th minute, and moments later the Bison went back ahead. Deda won the ball back in the center of the park, reversed field and found Gearhart ahead. Gearhart took two touches and let it fly from outside the box, finding the top left corner for her second of the game and fifth of the season.
Deda picked up her second assist of the day and her Patriot League-high 10th of the season. Deda now stands alone in second place on Bucknell's single-season assist chart. She is only the second Patriot League player in the last 15 years to record double-digit assists in a season.
The Terriers pressed hard for the equalizer, and the Bison seemed to dodge a bullet in the 80th minute when Leanne Engemann cleared a shot off the goal line. Hall made another big save on Amy Thompson's running header with seven minutes to play, but Boston University drew level in the 88th minute.
Jenna Oldham carried the ball to the top right edge of the area and found more space as a Bison defender stumbled. Oldham served the ball to the back post, where Lily Matthews played the short hop back into the right side netting.
The Terriers earned a couple of corner kicks and had a 4-1 shot advantage in overtime, but the Bison did have a free kick from just outside the 18. Rylee Donaldson was pushed to the ground at the edge of the area, but the foul was ruled to be outside the box. Deda's ensuing free kick skipped wide.
Donaldson, the Patriot League leader with nine goals, was kept off the scoresheet for only the second time in seven conference games, but she did lead all players with six shot attempts.
Hall finished with seven saves, while two Terrier keepers combined for three. Boston University rallied to win the shot count 18-17, and the Bison led 6-4 in corner kicks.
Prior to the final regular-season home game, Bucknell recognized its six seniors: Holly Burns, Alana Carlucci, Raegan Dunwoodie, Claire Mensi, Molly Mishler and Emilene Parham.
The Bison finish up with two away fixtures, Friday at Army and then Wednesday, Oct. 27 at Lehigh.
