Bucknell at a Glance
- Bucknell split a pair of Patriot League contests last week, and now the Bison move into the Central New York portion of their schedule with three games in six days against teams from that region. The Bison travel to Binghamton on Tuesday night before hitting the road again on Saturday to face Colgate. Bucknell then has a short turnaround before hosting Syracuse in the final non-league game of the regular season on Monday, Oct. 11.
- The Bison have been road warriors this season. Including this week's trips to Binghamton and Colgate, nine of the first 12 games of the campaign are away from home.
- Bucknell picked up a big road win last Wednesday, when Jordan Miller scored in overtime to beat Lehigh, 1-0. The Mountain Hawks were still winless at the time, but they bounced back to beat first-place Army 2-1 on Saturday.
- In their most recent outing, the Bison fell 2-1 at home to defending-champion American on Saturday. Freshman Gabe Dahlin scored his first career goal in that game to pull Bucknell within 2-1, but the Bison could not find the equalizer.
- Army, Navy and Holy Cross are currently top of the table with nine points from 3-1 Patriot League records. At 1-2-1 in league play, Bucknell sits in seventh place with four points and will need to move up at least one position to make the six-team Patriot League Tournament.
- Miller has enjoyed a breakout sophomore season for the Bison. He leads the Patriot League with six goals, all coming in a span of seven games. Miller is tied for 21st nationally with those six tallies.
- Senior midfielder Patrick O'Hara leads the team with three assists, while Eddie Perez-Pelaez has two. Both players picked up assists on Miller's golden goal at Lehigh last week. O'Hara saved a ball from going out over the end line, then he sent in a high cross that Perez-Pelaez headed on to Miller for the goal.
- Dahlin's goal was the first from a Bucknell back this season. It came off a long throw-in from Colin Eifert, resulting in a rare center back-to-center back scoring play.
- Bucknell opened the season with 7-0 and 2-0 losses to ACC foes North Carolina and Wake Forest, but all eight of the team's games since then have been decided by one goal or a draw. The Bison have scored at least one goal in seven of the last eight contests, with the lone exception a 0-0 tie at Lafayette on Sept. 18.
- Bucknell has one of its youngest squads in recent memory. The 28-man roster is comprised of four seniors, six juniors, eight sophomores and 10 freshmen. The eight sophomores could really be classified as rookies, as they also went through a full August preseason training camp for the first time.
- Bucknell has three captains for the 2021 season: seniors Alex Clarke and Patrick O'Hara, and sophomore MJ Kuczura. Kuczura is the first sophomore captain in team history.Â
- Paul Marco's team is in the midst of a terrific season. The Bearcats are 7-2, with the only blips coming on the road against Niagara (2-1) and Syracuse (7-0). Since that one-sided loss at Syracuse, Binghamton has posted three straight shutout wins over Monmouth (2-0), Stony Brook (1-0) and UMass-Lowell (1-0), with the latter two coming in America East play.
- Through nine games Binghamton has outscored its opponents 13-12, but seven of those 12 goals against came at Syracuse.
- Five players have scored goals thus far, with Ethan Homler leading the way with five. Homer has scored in two straight and four of his last five appearances. Oliver Svanlander has three goals, followed by Noah Luescher and Rory Anderson with two apiece.
- Svalander is a junior forward from Stockholm, Sweden, and he will be going up against another Stockholm native in Bucknell center back Gabe Dahlin. Both Swedes wear uniform No. 11.
- Binghamton has been a common non-league opponent for Bucknell in recent years, with the Bearcats holding a 7-5-3 lead in a series that dates back to 2001.
- Bucknell snapped an 0-5-1 series stretch with a 2-1 win at Binghamton in 2018, and then the two teams drew 1-1 in the most recent meeting in Lewisburg in 2019.
- Bernie Wright and Michael Pavick scored the Bison goals in the win at Binghamton in 2018. Bucknell led 2-0 before Connor McKnight got the Bearcats on the board in the 86th minute.
- In the 2019 matchup at Emmitt Field, Patrick O'Hara found an equalizer with 1:42 left in regulation to help the Bison salvage a 1-1 draw. Lucas Arzan scored for Binghamton in the first half. Bison goalkeeper Emmett Witmer saved a penalty kick only three minutes prior to O'Hara's goal. Witmer also saved a penalty in the Bucknell win at Binghamton one year earlier.
- Bucknell is 2-3-2 on Binghamton's home field.
- It's been a tough go for Colgate this fall, as the Raiders take an 0-10 record into a Tuesday non-league game at Syracuse.
- Colgate won the Patriot League championship as recently as 2018. The Raiders then went on to beat New Hampshire in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before being knocked out by Wake Forest.
- Colgate has dropped its first four Patriot League matches to Army (3-0), Navy (3-0), Holy Cross (3-1) and Lafayette (1-0). All but the Holy Cross game came on the road.
- The Raiders have only managed two goals thus far, coming from Max Edelstein and Ryan Krueger.
- Colgate has had the better of an all-time series that dates back to 1963. The Raiders hold a 29-10-9 mark against the Bison, with Bucknell's last win coming in 2012.
- Bucknell is winless in its last nine meetings with Colgate (0-6-3), although each of the last two contests have been draws.
- Bucknell's last win over Colgate in Hamilton was a 1-0 verdict in the 2010 Patriot League Tournament semifinals. The Bison would then go on to beat American 2-0 on the same field two days later to win their second straight league title.
- The Bison and Raiders clashed in Lewisburg last Apr. 3 as part of the modified 2021 spring season, and the game ended in a scoreless draw. Bennett Schwartz earned his first career shutout for Bucknell.
- In the last meeting in Hamilton, Matt Thorsheim tallied a second-half equalizer to help Bucknell salvage a 1-1 draw. Max Edelstein scored in the 10th minute for Colgate.
- The Orange are 5-5-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the ACC with two games coming up prior to their trip to Lewisburg. Syracuse hosts Colgate on Tuesday and North Carolina State on Friday.
- Syracuse has seen some wild scorelines this fall. In recent weeks the Orange have a 7-0 win over Binghamton and a 5-2 win over Vermont, countered by a 5-4 overtime loss to Louisville and a 3-2 OT loss to No. 16 Pittsburgh.
- The overtime setback at Pitt came in Syracuse's most recent outing on Friday. The two teams traded goals in the final five minutes of regulation before Guilherme Feitosa won it for the Panthers with 1:03 left in the second OT period.
- Syracuse has piled up 26 goals in 11 games this season while conceding 17.
- Seven players have scored multiple goals, led by Deandre Kerr with seven and Curt Calov with five. Kerr's seven goals all came in a run of four straight games, including three consecutive braces against Virginia, Binghamton and Louisville.
- Lucas Daunhauer has taken over the goalkeeper duties for the Orange. He has started the last eight games and has made 22 saves with 13 goals against.
- Bucknell is 2-5-1 all-time against Syracuse, although five of the eight meetings came from 1938-42. In more recent times, the Bison picked up a 1-0 home win in 2009; Syracuse won 4-1 on its home pitch in 2014, and then in 2015 the Orange won 1-0 in overtime at Emmitt Field.
- Mike Lansing made nine saves in goal for the Bison in that most recent matchup in 2015, but Kenny Lassiter scored 4:28 into overtime to win it for 15th-ranked Syracuse.
- The Orange were ranked 5th in the nation when the two teams met in late-October of 2014. Webster, N.Y., native Ben Derleth scored his first collegiate goal, but that was the lone highlight for the Bison, who conceded just 47 seconds into the match. Â
