Women’s Soccer Advances in Patriot League Tournament after 2-0 Win over Lehigh
10/31/2021 4:56:00 PM | Women's Soccer
LEWISBURG, Pa. – Sophomore midfielder Hannah Stuck scored her first collegiate goal to break a scoreless deadlock early in the second half, and senior captain Claire Mensi added an insurance marker in the 79th minute to lift the fourth-seeded Bucknell women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over fifth-seeded Lehigh in a Patriot League Tournament quarterfinal match on Sunday afternoon at Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium.
Now 9-7-3 on the season, the Bison will next head to Annapolis, Md., to face second-seeded Navy in the semifinals on Thursday at 6 p.m. Sixth-seeded Army upset No. 3 Loyola in the other quarterfinal contest, and the Black Knights will travel to top-seeded Boston University on Thursday.
Bucknell and Lehigh were meeting for the second time in four days, as the two sides closed out the regular season with a 1-0 Bison win in overtime in Bethlehem on Wednesday. That was a wide-open affair with 42 combined shots on the board, and it was more of the same in Lewisburg on Sunday. Bucknell finished with a 22-18 shot edge, including 16-11 in a frenzied second half.
The Bison controlled possession throughout the first 15 minutes of the match, but it remained 0-0 as Rylee Donaldson was denied by the right post on her first good look of the day. Lehigh leveled the field later in the half, and Jenna Hall kept the game scoreless with an acrobatic diving save on Courtney Supp's attempt in the final minute of the period.
The Bison came out flying at the start of the second half and were rewarded with a quick goal. Freshman Teresa Deda, who came into the game ranked seventh nationally in assists, picked up her 12th of the season and one of her best. The First Team All-Patriot League selection received a throw-in deep in the right corner, weaved through two defenders and squared up a service right along the edge of the 6-yard box. Stuck was waiting on the back post and one-timed it home to open her Bucknell scoring account.
Just after the goal the Bison earned three straight corners, and Stuck nearly had a second goal when her header was headed off the line by Lehigh defender Imani Ashman.
Hall, who made a career-high 12 saves in Wednesday's overtime shutout at Lehigh, was at her best again in the second half. She held strong on the near post to deny Corinne Lyght, and she swallowed up a rocket of an attempt from Wendie Fisher to keep it 1-0.
Just inside 12 minutes to play, center back Brooke Tracey sent a long clearance ahead to a streaking Donaldson, who had a step on her defender. Donaldson, the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and the conference's leading scorer, was taken down from behind a few strides into the box, and the penalty was awarded.
Mensi stepped to the spot, and then some craziness ensued. Goalkeeper Abby Trainor made the save on the penalty kick, and then she came off her line to smother Mensi's follow-up attempt. The ball squirted behind her, and Mensi slotted home her third crack it for a 2-0 Bison lead.
Lehigh pushed hard for a goal in the final 10 minutes, but Hall was up to the challenge. Her best save of the day came in the 80th minute on a rising shot from Alex Olde, tipping the ball into the crossbar and then pouncing on the rebound. Hall denied Lyght one more time with about nine minutes to go for her seventh and final save of the day.
Trainor also made seven saves for Lehigh, which finished its season 6-10-1.
Bucknell and Navy will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility. The Bison opened up Patriot League play with a 4-2 win over Navy at Emmitt Field on Sept. 18. Donaldson scored twice in that game to go with one each from Deda and Kelley Francis. This will be the first postseason meeting between the two teams since Bucknell won 3-2 in Annapolis in the 2017 Patriot League championship game.Gallery: (10-31-2021) Women's Soccer vs. Lehigh
