EASTON, Pa. – Emily Doyle scored a game-tying goal in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter at Lafayette on Saturday to send Bucknell field hockey into overtime, but the Leopards scored next in double-overtime to capture a 3-2 victory. With the win, Lafayette secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament with a 4-2 league record, and the Bison will be the No. 3 seed at 4-2 as well. The two teams will meet again during the semifinal round in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.
It was a back-and-forth game as the two team traded goals throughout. Both teams scored in the first quarter, and Lafayette jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the second. Bucknell would spend the rest of regulation in search of an equalizer before Doyle found it with 2:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Mary Kate Stefanowicz joined her fellow senior with a goal in the game, and Noor Kaur, Mackenzie Kile and Reanne Burgess all posted assists. Lafayette led 21-13 in shots, and Bucknell had the advantage in penalty corners at 6-4.
Junior goalkeeper Clara McCormick had a strong outing in the cage, making double-digit saves for a second time this season.
It took just 1:47 of game time for Lafayette to break the scoring open when a defensive mishap by the Bison left a two vs. one situation, and Alix Talkow finished the play off with a goal. Bucknell tied it a little under nine minutes later on a penalty corner with Stefanowicz scoring and Kaur and Kile assisting on the play. It was Stefanowicz' seventh goal of the season and Kile's team-leading 10th assist.
Lafayette took the lead again in the 24th minute and sent the Bison into the halftime break trailing, 2-1. After an initial defensive save from Grace McEvoy, Lafayette's Lineke Spaans shot off the rebound and into an empty cage. Lafayette's seven shots during the second were the most by either team in any quarter of the game.
The Bison fought hard to tie it coming out of halftime as they outshot the Leopards 6-2 and saw three solid chances on penalty corners, but the deficit would sit at 2-1 until the waning minutes of the fourth. Doyle's fourth-quarter equalizer was made possible by Burgess, who sent a pass across the circle where her teammate was able to poke it in.
Lafayette held Bucknell to no shots in the two overtime periods while posting six of their own. It was the sixth shot that sent the Bison packing as Spaans ripped the ball away from a Bison defender and passed it to Audry Sawers, who caught Bucknell with little defensive help.
Bucknell concludes its regular season on Sunday with a road game at Drexel. Sunday's contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
