PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Drexel Dragons scored twice in the final 11 minutes of Sunday's field hockey game to erase a 1-0 Bucknell lead and hand the Bison their second loss of the weekend. Bucknell led throughout the middle portions of the contest, but Drexel tested the Bison all game with 17 total shots.
Bucknell (8-9, 4-2 PL) posted 11 shots and trailed 4-2 in penalty corner opportunities. Sophomore Rachel Apa scored the lone goal for Bucknell in the second quarter and led the team with four shots. Goalkeeper Clara McCormick made five saves in the cage.
The Dragons hit Bucknell with a flurry of shots in the first quarter, including six over the first nine minutes of the contest. The attack continued into the second quarter as Drexel outshot the Bison 11-4 over the first 30 minutes, but it was Bucknell that struck first. Apa scored unassisted with just three minutes gone in the second quarter for her fourth goal of the season and the sixth of her career.
The Bison led 3-2 in shots in the third quarter, but none made it past the keeper as they entered the final quarter holding a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard.
With just over 10 minutes to play in the game, Drexel tied it up on a penalty corner after the initial shot hit the post and Avery Powell scored on the rebound. Just three minutes later, the Bison found themselves trailing after Shannon Tringola scored again for the Dragons.
Bucknell had chances to add another goal in the final quarter, seeing back-to-back penalty corners, but a save by the Drexel keeper and a defensive save denied the Bison.
Bucknell's regular season is over and the team heads to Washington, D.C. to face second-seeded Lafayette in the Patriot League semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 4. The Bison are playing as the No. 3 seed for a fifth consecutive season, and win on Thursday would place them in the championship game for a second year in a row.
