Bucknell Men's Water Polo Earns 12-9 Win over Mount Saint Mary's on Senior Day

LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Bucknell University men's water polo team took a 12-9 win over Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day at Kinney Natatorium.Â
Bucknell held off a game Mount St. Mary's program in its first full season of competition maintaining a two-goal advantage over the final minutes in evening its record at 9-9 this season.Â
Bucknell led 3-1 after one, extending that lead to 4-1 on a goal by Hasan Mogultay to start the second as it threatened to pull away early. Bucknell used an excellent defensive effort in the first half, limiting The Mount to just two goals before another goal from Mogultay on a pass from Otto extended the Bison lead to 5-2 at the break.Â
Bucknell widened its lead to as many as five, 8-3 in the third when Andu Vlasceanu found the back of the cage, but The Mount responded with four of the next five goals, scoring the last goal of the run to start the fourth to pull within two, 9-7. After the two teams exchanged goals to start the fourth, Shay Gillearn found Bucknell's insurance goal to keep a three-goal advantage as it took a 12-9 win in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.Â
Seniors Jack Otto and Bence Fazekas were honored prior to Saturday's game, and each contributed to the win. Otto made six saves while going the distance in goal, while Fazekas added his first goal of the year in the third period for Bucknell's sixth goal of the game.Â
Jack Lewis and Mogultay led the way for the Bison offensively with three goals each, while Gillearn added two goals. Josh Yardley, Ethan Jones, Fazekas, and Vlasceanu each added goals as seven different Bison scored in the win.Â
Bucknell will have a short turnaround, traveling to MAWPC-East-leading Fordham on Sunday for a 2 p.m. tilt.Â
