BRONX, N.Y. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team overturned an early deficit, but the sixteenth-ranked Rams fought back in overtime to take a 14-13, sudden-death victory at home on Sunday afternoon.
Bucknell started slow, finding itself trailing by as many as four, 7-3, in the second period in a high-scoring first half of play. However, the Bison ended the half with momentum, scoring two straight goals courtesy of Matt Ryckman and Liam Stott to pull within two, 7-5, at the halftime break.
Bucknell kept that momentum to start the second half, scoring three of the next four goals to tie the game for the first time in the third period at eight. Ryckman was on hand once again for the tying goal, before Bucknell took its first lead of the game since the opening minutes on a goal by Hasan Mogultay moments later.
Bucknell managed to keep a two-goal lead late into the fourth, 12-10, but two straight goals by Fordham on back-to-back possessions in the final 47 seconds managed to send the contest into overtime. Fordham opened the overtime period with a goal to regain the lead, but Doruk Ozar responded on the following possession to tie the game once more.
Ryckman forced one more save from Fordham's Bailey O'Mara late on, but neither team could score as the game went into sudden death, where the Rams found the winning goal.
Mogultay and Ryckman scored three goals each in the defeat, with the latter setting a new career-high in the process. Josh Yardley added two goals along with Ozar, while Stott, Shay Gillearn, and Ethan Jones each scored.
Adrien Touzot returned to the cage on Sunday, making nine saves while adding a steal.
Bucknell returns to MAWPC play next weekend at Kinney Natatorium when it hosts Navy and Johns Hopkins at Kinney Natatorium on Sunday, November 7.
