Lyles Matches School Record with Three Touchdown Catches
Freshman quarterback Ethan Grady connected with senior wide receiver Dominic Lyles for three touchdowns in his first collegiate start, but the Hoyas (2-4, 1-2 PL) scored two touchdowns during the final six minutes of regulation to defeat the Bison (1-6, 0-3 PL).
Lyles matched the Bucknell record with his three touchdown catches. He became the sixth Bison to accomplish this feat, joining Carl Probst (1971 vs. The Citadel), Ken Jenkins (1980 vs. West Chester), Mike Morrow (1986 vs. Lafayette), Will Carter (2014 vs. Lehigh) and Jake Hartman (2014 vs. Lafayette).
Grady finished the game with 162 yards on 12 completions, with five going for 110 yards to Lyles. This represented Lyles's third career 100-yard game and a new career-high total in receiving yards; he also eclipsed 1,000 career receiving yards in this contest, the 28th of his Bucknell career.
Lyles's third touchdown catch came at the third quarter's 9:46 mark, capping a nine-play, 72-yard march that gave the Bison a 21-13 advantage. It proved the last time they would put points on the board, however, and Georgetown ultimately scored 16 unanswered to emerge victorious.
Bucknell held the Hoyas to a 21-yard field goal on their next possession. Georgetown had marched all the way to the Bison's two-yard line, even getting a fresh set of downs following a pass interference penalty. Aneesh Vyas came up with a tackle for a loss on the first play of that sequence, helping keep the Hoyas out of the end zone.
Georgetown's go-ahead scoring march began with 6:46 remaining in regulation. The Hoyas began that drive near midfield after forcing Bucknell to punt from deep within its end. Following a roughing the passer penalty that advanced them to the Bison's 25-yard line, Pierce Holley connected with Cameron Crayton for a 17-yard gain. He then finished off the drive with an eight-yard quarterback keeper score.
Georgetown's successful two-point conversion, a rush by Joshua Stakely, was called back due to a holding penalty. Holley then had his pass fall incomplete on the Hoyas' next attempt, keeping the score at 22-21.
Bucknell went a quick three and out on its next drive, and Georgetown again took over near midfield. After picking up 21 yards on four-straight carries, Herman Moultrie III broke free for a 33-yard touchdown that made it a 29-21 game with 2:55 left on the clock.
Jovone Campbell put an end to the Bison's final drive, hauling in a pass that deflected off a wide receiver.
The Hoyas jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, with Holley completing the game's very first pass for a 70-yard touchdown to Crayton. Bucknell evened the score at 7-7 at the first quarter's 6:21 mark, with Grady finding Lyles for a 31-yard score. During that eight-play, 66-yard drive, Cooper ran for 23 yards on five carries.
Georgetown began its first drive of the second quarter at midfield after Stephen Sergio forced the Bison to punt from deep within their end by coming up with a sack for a loss of 11 yards and a tackle for a loss of three yards on back-to-back play. Bucknell's defense ultimately held fast, with Mason Taylor breaking up a pass in the end zone to force the Hoyas to settle for a 31-yard field goal.
The Bison took their first lead of the game on their next drive, which began with a 34-yard Cooper rumble out of a wildcat formation. Later, on a 4th and 6, Grady found Lyles for a 24-yard touchdown that made it a 14-10 game in Bucknell's favor.
Georgetown trimmed its deficit to 14-13 in the second quarter's final second. The Hoyas started the half's final drive at the Bison's 37-yard line thanks to a kick catch interference penalty; they used the 34 seconds they had to advance to the seven-yard line; because they had to spike the ball on a 3rd and 1 to stop the clock at one second, they ultimately settled for a field goal.
For Bucknell, Jared Cooper logged 91 yards on 19 carries while Coleman Bennett returned four kickoffs for 68 yards.
Jonathan Searcy led the defense with nine tackles, one more than his previous career high. Brent Jackson and Blake Leake added seven apiece, with Leake also forcing his first career fumble.
For Georgetown, Holley threw for 251 yards and one touchdown on 18 completions. Crayton (136) and Asante Das (71) each exceeded 70 receiving yards while Moultrie III logged 83 yards on the ground.
Defensively, Justin Fonteneaux led all players with 10 tackles. Ahmad Wilson made nine, with three going for a loss.
The Hoyas finished with advantages in first downs (23-15) and total offense (476-301) while the Bison led in time of possession (31:26-28:34). Georgetown recorded eight tackles for a loss of 24 yards compared to Bucknell's two for a loss of four yards.
The Bison next face off against Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
