WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Bucknell University men's water polo team outlasted George Washington, 14-10 in an important MAWPC fixture on Saturday afternoon. The Bison went on to drop a narrow 11-10 decision to Navy in the nightcap on Saturday evening in Annapolis.
Game One: Bucknell 14, GW 10.
The Bison broke open a tie game at the half with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Colonials 4-1 in the period en route to a four-goal victory.
The Colonials started the game the brighter of the two teams, taking a 4-1 lead with 4:29 left in the first quarter.
However, Bucknell responded with two straight goals to close the period as Hasan Mogultay and Andu Vlasceanu each found the back of the cage to pull within one, 4-3, after one.
The Bison would then go on to score two of the next three goals to tie the game at five with a goal each from Vlasceanu and Doruk Ozar, and the two teams traded two goals each over the final 2:37 to tie the game at seven entering the break. Josh Yardley found Bucknell's two goals over the final 1:53 of the half.
It was all Bucknell in the third, as Ethan Jones got things started with a goal on the powerplay at the 6:43 mark, before goals from Jack Lewis, Ozar, and Vlasceanu over the next three minutes put the Bison up by four, 11-7, with 3:10 left in the third.
Bucknell managed to hold onto the lead in the fourth, but not without a late run from the Colonials. A goal from the Colonials' Viktor Jovanovic brought GW within one, 11-10, with 2:29 remaining. However, Ozar found the back of the cage with two GW defenders on him on a patient possession by the Bison to preserve the win. An excellent defensive possession by the Bison with one minute to go, along with a great save from Touzot, helped Bucknell take a 14-10 win and avenge an earlier loss this season to the Colonials.
Ozar led the way for Bucknell with four goals, while Vlasceanu added three. Touzot made a season-best 12 saves in the win for the Bison.
Game Two: Navy 11, Bucknell 10
The Mids broke open a 10-10 tie with 2:53 remaining with the game-winning goal with 2:23 to go. Bucknell managed to tie the game after trailing 10-8 with 6:12 remaining, but the goal with just over two minutes on the clock turned out to be the difference.
Neither team led by more than three goals throughout the entire game in a closely-contested affair. After a defensive first quarter in which each team scored one goal apiece, Bucknell found itself with a 4-2 lead after goals from J. Yardley, Walker Butler, and Andu Vlasceanu in the first four minutes of the second. However, Navy responded with a flurry to close the half, scoring three goals over the final 2:04 to take a 5-4 lead at the break.
Navy continued that run into the third quarter, scoring two more unanswered goals to take a 7-4 lead with 5:07 left in the third. Jack Lewis ended the Bucknell scoreless streak of 6:31 with a goal at the 4:11 mark of the third.
The Bison would pull within one goal on multiple occasions, and finally managed to tie the game for the first time since the 44-second mark of the second quarter with 2:53 remaining in the fourth. The Bison, trailing by two with 6:12 to go, scored two unanswered goals courtesy of J. Yardley and Jones to tie the game at ten with 2:23 remaining. However, Navy responded with the eventual game-winning goal by way of Merle Richman just 30 seconds later to take the one-goal win.
Jones contributed a season-best three goals in the defeat, while J. Yardley and Mogultay each added multiple goals.
Bucknell continues its road swing this weekend on Sunday at Johns Hopkins.
