LEWISBURG, Pa. – The No. 23 Bucknell University women's water polo team scored a season-best 17 goals in a commanding 17-4 win over St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday afternoon at Kinney Natatorium. The 17 goals are the most by the Bison since a 17-3 win over Fresno Pacific on March 10, 2019.
Much like Friday evening's game against Salem, Bucknell once again used a fast start to take control early on. After scoring the first four goals of the game against the Tigers on Friday, The Bison scored 11 unanswered to close the first half of play to race out to a 12-1 lead. Marcela Herrera opened the scoring for Bucknell shortly after back-to-back saves from Georgia Lewis in the first quarter, before the Terriers responded with a goal by Emma Leto just a few seconds later.
From that point on, it was all Bucknell as the Bison rallied off 11 straight tallies to end the half. Leading scorer Ally Furano scored four times through a 7-1 run to close the first quarter, complemented by two goals from Kali Hyham, and capped off by Benson's first goal of the day on an assist by freshman Anna Bautista. A. Furano scored twice more in the second period, along with goals from Benson and Bautista, as Bucknell led 12-1 at the halftime horn.
Abbie Coscia, after scoring her first career goal on Friday, scored once again to open the third period on an assist from Paige Furano, who leads the team in helpers this season. P. Furano posted two assists on the day, and has now registered multiple assists in five of Bucknell's six games in 2020. A. Furano, Bautista, and freshman Chloe Smith rounded out the scoring for the Bison as they held the Terriers to just three goals in the second half of play. The eight goals by the Bison in the first period are the most by the team in any quarter of play this season.
A. Furano came close to tying her own school-record of eight goals she set against Marist last week after recording seven on Saturday to lead all scorers. Hyham, Benson, and Bautista each added two goals, while four other Bison scored once. Hyham also drew four ejections on the day, while Lewis made eight saves while allowing just two goals in her three quarters of action.
Bucknell will return to Kinney Natatorium on Sunday morning for a tough matchup against No. 20 Wagner at 10:30 a.m.
