ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Bucknell women's swimming & diving team secured a runner-up finish at the Patriot League Championships on Saturday night at Navy's Lejeune Hall.
The Bison, who wrapped up the four-day meet with 533 points, took second at the Patriot League Championships for the 12th time in program history and for the first time since the 2015 edition. Bucknell was bolstered by eight-medal winning performances, including a golden showing by Maggie Wyngowski in Friday's 400 IM behind an NCAA 'B' cut time.
Navy won the team title with 927 points while Lehigh rounded out the top three with 506 points. The Mids, Bison and Mountain Hawks were the only teams to eclipse 500 points at the 2020 Patriot League Championships.
For leading Bucknell to its runner-up showing, head coach Dan Schinnerer was named the Patriot League Women's Swimming Coach of the Year. He was previously named the Women's Swimming Coach of the Year in 2013; he was also named the Men's Swimming Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2010.
Sabrina Vumbacco became the second Bison in three seasons to be tabbed as the Patriot League Women's Rookie of the Meet, joining Wyngowski, who earned the honor in 2018. Vumbacco captured a pair of bronze medals at her first Patriot League championship meet.
In addition to her 400 IM gold, Wyngowski won a silver medal in Thursday's 200 IM and a bronze medal in Saturday's 200 breaststroke. Hartigan and Vumbacco went second and third respectively in both Thursday's 500 freestyle and Saturday's 1,650 freestyle. Hartigan also won a bronze medal in Saturday's 200 freestyle and teamed with Emily Gorham, Sophia Donati and Abby Merriman for a third-place performance in Wednesday's 800 freestyle relay.
Wyngowski and Hartigan each set a pair of school records. Wyngowski set new Bison standards in the 200 IM (2:00.15) and 400 IM (4:15.26) while Hartigan lowered Bucknell's times in the 200 freestyle (1:48.22) and 500 freestyle (4:46.48).
The Bison held the second spot at the end of each day at the Patriot League Championships. On Saturday, they cemented their hold on the position. Notably, Bucknell placed five swimmers in the 1,650 freestyle's top eight: Merriman (4th), Gorham (5th) and Amanda Lauer (8th) joined Hartigan and Vumbacco as important point scorers in that event; together, the quintet accounted for a staggering 73 points.
In the 200 breaststroke, Catherine Craig joined Wyngowski in the 'A' finals, finishing sixth. Emma Hadley added a sixth-place effort in the 200 backstroke.
The Bison next attend the Navy Long Course Qualifier on Thursday, Feb. 27 and the ECAC Championships on Friday, Feb. 28 through Sunday, March 1. Both meets will be held at Navy's Lejeune Hall.
