CARY, N.C. – Penn State used three runs each in the sixth and the eighth inning to break open a 2-2 tie as the Bucknell University baseball team fell 9-6 to the Nittany Lions on Friday afternoon at the USA Baseball Complex. The game against Penn State marks the third straight season Bucknell has opened up against a Power-Five opponent. Eunsang Yu provided a big RBI single for his first career hit to tie the game at two in the sixth inning, but the Nittany Lions added seven runs over the final three frames to take a 9-6 win.
Bucknell found itself with a chance to score right away in the top of the first inning. Leadoff hitter and All-Patriot League Preseason Team selection Tyler Wincig reached on an error before Peter Marren, making his tenth career start, singled to third to move Wincig two bases a few batters later. However, the Bison couldn't capitalize in the frame.
It was Penn State that struck the first blow in the game after an error by the Bison in the bottom of the second allowed Ryan Ford of the Nittany Lions to use a sac fly to bring home Curtis Robison.
The Bison got on the board in the top of the third when Chris Cannizzaro, who posted two doubles on opening day at NC State last season, used a sac fly to bring home Brendan Lowery for Bucknell's first run of the year.
However, Penn State responded in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead after a wild pitch moved Jacob Padilla, who singled with one out in the inning, to second before he scored on an RBI single from Matt Wood.
Bucknell kept within one run as starter Nate Grisius allowed just one baserunner over the next two innings, and overall had a solid day on the mound in his first start since starting game one against Lehigh in Bucknell's final home series. In the top of the sixth, Eunsang Yu delivered a big two-out RBI single to score Evan Madigan to tie the game at two apiece. The inning developed with two outs, as Madigan walked and stole second before Yu brought the senior home with his first career hit.
Penn State responded once again in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs in the frame to take a 5-2 lead. Ryan Ford drove in a two-RBI single as Penn State loaded the bases with one out, before a wild pitch by the Bison provided the third run of the inning.
Cannizzaro was involved once again in Bucknell's third run in the top of the seventh. The sophomore reached on a fielding error by the Nittany Lions that allowed Lowery, who doubled to lead off the inning, to score as Bucknell pulled within two, 5-3.
The Nittany Lions once again found a run in response in the bottom of the frame on a double by Kris Kremer to restore a three-run advantage, 6-3, adding three more runs in the eighth to take a 9-3 lead.
Bucknell grabbed three runs in the top of the ninth courtesy of a sac fly by Marren and a two-RBI double by Alex Baumann, but ultimately fell short in the season-opening game for both schools, 9-6.
The Bison managed seven hits overall, and left ten runners on base. The Nittany Lions committed five errors overall to Bucknell's two.
Grisius (0-1), was charged with the defeat after pitching five innings while allowing three hits and striking out three. The Bison used five pitchers on the day.
Bucknell will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Monmouth scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m.
