LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Chris Tanabe of the Bucknell men's golf team on Monday was named the Bison Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 16-22 after his record-setting performance in a win at the Dartmouth Invitational over the weekend. A day later, Tanabe was tabbed as the Patriot League Golfer of the Week.
Tanabe picked up his second career collegiate win after posting rounds of 68 and 65 at the par-71 Hanover Golf Club. His 9-under-par 133 set the Bucknell 36-hole scoring record, and his Sunday round tied the school records for low 18 holes (65) and low 18 in relation to par (-6).
Tanabe fashioned six birdies and did not make a single bogey on the way to his 65, and he came from behind to defeat Drexel's Alex Butler by two strokes. Butler had opened with a 64 in the first round on Saturday.
Tanabe's previous college win came last spring at Lafayette's Abarta Coca-Cola Collegiate Invitational, which preceded a T-7th finish at the Patriot League Championship. He also won the Pennsylvania Amateur Championship over the summer. That outstanding play has carried over into the start of the fall season, where five of his eight rounds have been under par. Tanabe's fall scoring average is down to 70.5.
Tanabe has finished T-12th, T-3rd and 1st in his three appearances this spring, giving him a won-loss record of 239-13-4. In the Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings, he is now listed No. 374 out of nearly 1,800 Division I college players.
This is his second career Patriot League weekly honor, with the other coming last year after his win at Lafayette.
The Bison have been getting outstanding play up and down the lineup this season, and they have finished in second place in each of their three events to date. That marks the team's best start to a season in 10 years, when the Bison opened with a win and two runner-up finishes in their first three events.
Tanabe and the Bison will look to keep it going this weekend at the Macdonald Cup, hosted by Yale on Saturday and Sunday.
