Field Hockey Comes Up Just Short in Back-and-Forth Opener

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Junior Leah Fogelsanger scored her first goal of the new season with just under five minutes remaining to set the scene for a dramatic comeback attempt, but the Bison's efforts came up just short as James Madison held onto a 3-2 victory in Bucknell's 2019 opener.
Bucknell trailed by two goals late in the fourth quarter when Fogelsanger converted on a give-and-go from Mackenzie Kile to make it a one-score game. Though the Bison had several one-on-one opportunities down the stretch, the clock hit zero before the team could find an equalizer.
James Madison was on the board first when senior Miranda Rigg broke the scoring open with an unassisted reverse stick shot that gave the Dukes a 1-0 lead two minutes into the second.
Bucknell wasted no time finding an answer in the third as sophomore Emily Doyle made good on a penalty corner that tied the game 4:37 into the quarter. Doyle found herself in perfect position to deflect an Allie Christopher shot past the JMU goalkeeper, making it a 1-1 game.
JMU's Marina Rupinski scored back-to-back goals less than 11 minutes apart to give her team a 3-1 lead with under 12 to play, which proved to be all the Dukes would need to begin their 2019 campaign 1-0.
Bucknell goalkeeper Olivia Harris recorded nine saves against 15 James Madison shots. JMU's Caitlin Nelson picked up her first win of the season after posting four saves.
Bucknell goes to Lock Haven, Pa. on Sunday to take on the Bald Eagles in the team's first road action of the season. Sunday's game is set for 1 p.m.
